      Oil painting on hardboard Austria, around 1950 Karl Schiestl (1899-1966) – Austrian painter from Baden near Vienna Signed on lower right ‘Schiestl K.’ Wooden frame Dimensions: 66.4 x 83.3 cm Very good condition The present painting is a work of the Austrian artist Karl Schiestl and was created around 1950. A hazy landscape is shown after a storm with a windmill and horse-drawn carriage. Due to the very fine, just hinted colorization the wheel of the mill seems to be in permanent movement. Schiestl uses a strong colors with dominant shades of green and yellow. The painting is in very good condition. It only shows the usual framing marks. The work is signed on the lower right ‘Schiestl K.’. It measure, including the frame 69.3 x 87.5 cm. The dimensions of the hardboard are 66.4 x 83.3 cm. Karl Schiestl (1899-1966) Karl Schiestl was born 1899 in Baden near Vienna, where he worked as an artist until his death in 1966. His favoured motifs were landscapes, alpine landscapes and views of towns. Schiestl used oil, gouache and pen to create his works. 'The Gypsy Baron' is performed on the brightly lit stage. From the orchestra pit the viewer's gaze can wander to the audience, which is mesmerized by the show. The setting is rendered with a free brushwork in an almost sketch-like manner. The artist deliberately omitted specific details. Rather his aim was to capture the sensation and atmospheric effects of the scene. The shift between dark-toned, finely graded nuances and bright shades of yellow and ocher creates exciting lighting effects and an evocative atmosphere. The painting is in very good condition. The work is signed in red 'Schiestl K' lower left. The frame shows slight wear. The framed work measures 78 x 98 cm, the artist's board measures 64 x 85.5 cm.
