      Mar. 02, 2016

Wilhelm Schacht (1872-1951), Winter Scene, Oil Painting, 1920

      Est: €500 - €650

Oil on canvas, laid down on wood Germany, around 1920 Wilhelm Schacht (1872-1951) – German painter, lithograph, graphic artist and illustrator Signed at the lower right ‘W. Schacht’ Dimensions of canvas: 34 x 43.9 cm Marbled wooden frame with gold-plated inboard trim: 41 x 51.2 cm Good condition Impressive painting of an apparently swift, assured painting style and with a controlled composition and atmosphere With powerful brushwork, offered painting depicts a narrow street, which is bordered by a picket fence and an embankment and which leads the viewer through a contorted landscape with houses. The colors white, brown, black and green in the foreground correspond with the luminous brightening of the hill in the background as well as with the indirect sunlight, which in turn evokes a beautiful shadow on roofs and facades. In particular, the blue-white of the snow in the street indicates frost and coldness. Condition: The work is in a good condition with minor signs of age and wear. Minimal color abrasion can be seen in places along the edges. Partial craquelure is visible due to the paste-like application of paint. Under UV-light two smaller touch-ups appear at the upper right corner. The dimensions of the canvas measure 34 x 43.9 cm, the framed dimensions are 41 x 51.2 cm. Wilhelm Schacht (1872-1951) Wilhelm Schacht studied in Leipzig and Munich, where he eventually turned to the realistic style of painting of the Barbizon school. Nevertheless some of his works exude a sentimental idyll. Only in the interwar period, his style became more simple, loose and expressive. Schacht has mainly been working as an established landscape painter and in 1923 co-founded the ‘Rothenburger Künstlerbund’. Over a long period, Schacht was active in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Wilhelm Schacht (1872-1951), Winter Scene, Oil Painting, 1920

      Est: €500 - €650

Oil on canvas, laid down on cardboard Germany, around 1920 Wilhelm Schacht (1872-1951) – German painter, lithograph, graphic artist and illustrator Signed at the lower right ‘W. Schacht’ Dimensions of canvas: 34.1 x 43.7 cm Marbled wooden frame with gold-plated inboard trim: 41 x 51.2 cm Good condition Very skillfully rendered, atmospherically work that comes alive by means of the loosely led brush strokes and the paste-like application of paint Offered painting depicts an intimate street scene of the wintry-snowy Swabian Harburg with a significantly higher positioned horizon. On the slightly ascending street that is flanked by farms and farm buildings, some residents are visible, whereby the two children at the lower right constitute a distinctive color accent in this rather monochromatic painting. Condition: The work is in a good condition with minor signs of age and wear. Minimal color abrasion can be seen in places along the edges. Partial color loss as well as delicate craquelure is visible at the lower half of the image, both due to the paste-like application of paint. The dimensions of the canvas measure 34.1 x 43.7 cm, the framed dimensions are 41 x 51.2 cm. Wilhelm Schacht (1872-1951) Wilhelm Schacht studied in Leipzig and Munich, where he eventually turned to the realistic style of painting of the Barbizon school. Est: €500 - €650

Oil on canvas, laid down on cardboard Germany, around 1920 Wilhelm Schacht (1872-1951) – German painter, lithograph, graphic artist and illustrator Signed at the lower left ‘W. Schacht’ Dimensions of canvas: 33.9 x 44.2 cm Marbled wooden frame with gold-plated inboard trim: 41 x 51.2 cm Good condition Idyllic composition depicting a snow-covered village in an expressive manner; partially paste-like application of paint Offered painting depicts a secluded, wintry and snow-covered landscape in Harburg. Between two roofs, a narrow view of the Swabian or Franconian Alb can be seen. A sloping path leads past bare trees and a rough picket fence. A homewell and a clothesline with colorful pieces of laundry complete the rather gloomy picture. The painting style is expressively animated and characterized by a rich application of paint. It faintly reminds of works by Alfons Walde (cf. picture horizon). A beautiful and high quality work. Condition: The work is in a good condition with minor signs of age and wear. Minimal color abrasion can be seen in places along the edges. Partial color loss as well as delicate craquelure is visible at the lower half of the image, both due to the paste-like application of paint.
