          Apr. 25, 2023

HELEN SCAVINI KONIG (1886-1974) / LENCI TORINO

          Est: €800 - €1,200

A Lenci glazed and painted ceramic wall mask. 1937. Depicting a head of a girl. Stamp on the reverse 'Lenci/ Made in Italy/ Torino/ 2.37.' The hair is painted with a pattern of a cityscape at night of figures at tower buildings. Helen König was born in Turin on Feb. 28, 1886. Her mother was an intellectual and refined woman from Austria. Her father Francesco was a doctor of chemistry and natural sciences who came to Turin in 1885 for the position of head of the 'Reale Stazione Agraria'. From an early age, Helen was nicknamed Lencina or Lenci in the family. Her father died very young and her mother was left alone with four children. Helen travelled, first with her mother and then alone, to Switzerland, Austria, Hungary and Germany, taking on various jobs. In Düsseldorf, she attended the School of Arts and Crafts, where she graduated in photography in 1907. In 1915, she returned to Turin, where she married Enrico Scavini, with whom she founded the toy factory 'Ars Lenci' in 1919, regaining her childhood nickname. Among the numerous products, wooden toys, children's furniture, hats, scarves and shoes, the felt dolls and puppets stand out, which defined the company's success. Some artists of the time, such as Gigi Chessa and Marcello Dudovich, collaborated with Helen König on the dolls, which soon became famous in Italy and abroad. In 1926, König began producing flowers and wreaths in the famous fabric, which would become known as 'Lenci cloth'. In 1928 she began producing ceramics, some made by herself, others by Felice Tosalli, Cläre Burchart and again Gigi Chessa. In 1929 the magazine 'Casabella' devoted an article to the ceramics of 'Ars Lenci' in 1930 they were exhibited at the IV Triennale di Arti Decorative in Monza. The economic crisis of 1929 did not spare the company, which was also damaged by excessive production costs. In 1933, brothers Pilade and Flavio Garella became partners in "Ars Lenci" of which they took full responsibility by 1936. In 1937 Helen König was employed for five years in her former company as artistic director; in 1938 her husband Enrico died and from 1941 she stopped working as a ceramist. She died in Turin in 1974. Applique. Epreuve en faïence à décor polychrome. Cachet au revers 'Lenci/ Made in Italy/ Torino/ 2.37.' Muurapplique. Meerkleurig geglazuurd aardewerk. Stempel op verso 'Lenci/ Made in Italy/ Torino/ 2.37.' (Bron: https://www.museotorino.it/view/s/f6c9604e426548a9b9acd2cc69e95cdf)
