      Est: €500 - €700

Caroline Scally (1886-1973) Statue in the garden, Parknasilla Watercolour 24 x 31 cm (9.5 x 12") Provenance: From artists family by descent Although well written up in Patricia Butler's excellent recent book "The Silent Companion" - a History of the Watercolour Society of Ireland Caroline Scally is another of those forgotten women artists of the 20th Century. This is not necessarily a recent problem as 45 years ago when reviewing the 1965 Independent Artists exhibition, the Irish Times Art Critic Brian Fallon declared " the two artists that stood out by sheer quality were Dairine Vanston and Caroline Scally. Both are rather sadly underrated, both go their own way and to hell with fashion". It is hard to believe that today a one time pupil of Orpen, a President of The Dublin Painters Society, a committee member of the watercolour society and a person whose works in the 1950's were being bought by such discerning collectors as Sir Alfred Beit and Ernie O'Malley as well as The Haverty Trust would now be just a footnote in most of the art history books. Dr S.B. Kennedy wrote in his article on Caroline Scally for the Retrospective Exhibition held at the Frederick Gallery in March 2005 "As an artist Caroline Scally has been unjustly neglected.... Looking at her work, besides her dexterity with paint, her lyricism, her sense of colour and her eye for the often quirky details of an architectural piece, it is the sheer pleasure that she obviously derived from painting that we respond to with such delight". The following 17 lots all come from the artist's family which we hope might bring Caroline back from obscurity and include one work by Caroline's daughter Miranda who played a big part with the development of The Irish Countrywomen's Association with Muriel Gann.
