JAMES SAYERS (1748-1823) 'Date Obolom Belisario', etching. Published by Charles Bretherton 24 August 1782. The figure to the left is Isaac Barré (after whom Wilkes-Barré in Pa is named), a valiant soldier in the French and Indian Wars, but forgotten by Pitt. the statesman Lord Shelburne, William Petty, 1st Marquess of Lansdowne (1737-1805) (depicted here to the right) recognises his political value as an opponent of Pitt and promotes his political career. He is to become a great support of the American mercantile classes, especially opposing the Stamp Acts. Barré was blind in one eye, hence the reference to Belisarius, the blind general ignored by the Emperor Justinian, who was forced to beg for a living, but whose talents were later recognised, which Sayers employs in this rare caricature.
