    Frederick Richard Say, 1804-1868 A portrait of Edward Law, 1st Earl of Ellenborough (1790-1871) , Three quarter length, standing by a column wearing The Order of The Bath. Oil on canvas. Lord Ellenborough was a Conservative Politician. He was four times President of The Board of Control and served as Governor-General of India between 1842 and 1844. He was educated at Eton College and after at St.John’s College,Cambridge.He represented St,Michael’s,Cornwall in The House of Commons.He took his seat in The House of Lords, on the death of his Father in 1818. He was made Lord Privy Seal in Wellington’s Government and acted as his Assistant. He was Governor-General of India during a difficult and turbulent time with uprisings by the Sikhs and rebellions in Afghanistan. He returned to England in 1844. Under Sir Robert Peel’s Premiership he was made First Lord of The Admiralty. Lord Ellenborough married twice. Firstly to Lady Octavia Catherine, Daughter of Robert Stewart, 1st Marquess of Londonderry in 1813. She died in 1819. He married, secondly Jane Digby, Daughter of Sir Henry Digby. They had one child. Frederick Richard Say (1804-1868) was a Painter of Society portraits. He attended Benjamin Robert Hayden’s School. He commenced exhibiting at The Royal Academy and The British Institution in 1826. He exhibited a total of 78 paintings. He painted a full-length portrait of Prince Albert for presentation to Cambridge University and also a portrait of Queen Victoria’s second Son, Prince Alfred. He also painted portraits of The Prime Ministers, Sir Robert Peel and The Duke of Wellington. Examples of his work can be seen at The National Maritime Museum, Greenwich. The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge and The National Gallery of Scotland. A version of this portrait can be seen in The National Portrait Gallery, London. 48 x 36 inches; 120 x 91 cm.
