ROOKWOOD SARA SAX (AMERICAN, 1870-1949) MOLDED OWL-FORM ART POTTERY MUG, blue-toned slate gray matte drip glaze, the press-molded cylindrical body featuring a fluffy owl to the front, while the rear half features large oak leaves and acorns fanning outward from the D-form branch handle. Marks to underside include impressed R-P fourteen flame point mark with "VI", shape number "1171", and a "V" and incised interlacing "Sx" signature, plus an illegibly worn old sticker. Rookwood Pottery, Cincinnati, OH. Dated 1906. 5 3/8" H.  Catalogue Note: Sara Sax was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and worked at the Rookwood Pottery from 1896 to 1931. She is most famous for her later work with the pottery which often features intricate feathery decorations and peacocks as well as other birds. This whimsical mug is a fine example of the ceramicist's usage and mastery of atypical glazes; it is pooled thicker and thinner in some areas, allowing the detail to shine through in high points of the feathers and foliage.

      Est: $200 - $300

Sara Sax (1870-1949) for Rookwood Pottery early Decorated Porcelain cream pitcher with modern design in blue, special shape number S1889 Cincinnati, Ohio, 1912 high glazed ceramic impressed factory marks and artist's monogram 5 1/2"w x 3 1/2"d x 3 1/8"h Catalog Note: Around 1912, Rookwood was forced to abandon its Iris glaze, most likely because it contained excessive amounts of lead. Needing a new clear gloss finish, the company began experimentation with a true porcelain and this pitcher was one of the trials, almost all of which were done by Sara Sax. It was several years before porcelain became a regular part of production at Rookwood.
