Paul Sawyier Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1865 - d. 1917

Artist Paul Sawyier was an American landscape painter, primarily of scenery in Kentucky and around the New York City area in the late 1800s and early 1900s. He also painted portraits, including one of Mark Twain in his twilight years. Paul Sawyier's paintings of landscapes frequently included a focal point or accent elements such as well-worn bridges, lazy country lanes, or families enjoying the scenery.

Artist Paul Sawyier painted in Impressionist style, with short strokes and delicate, pastel colors. His Kentucky landscapes were chiefly watercolors and most of his New York landscapes, many of Brooklyn or the Catskills, were in oil. Paul Sawyier prints of his work are abundant, particularly as modern giclees. The Kentucky Historical Society retains one of the largest collections of his original works. Collectors can find many other landscape paintings for sale online and at Invaluable.

Paul Sawyier - Fishing on the Elkhorn

    Est: $25,000 - $35,000

Paul Sawyier - American, 1865-1917 Fishing on the Elkhorn Oil on board 17" x 11" Signed Bearing a signature that Sawyier used while living in Kentucky before moving to New York in 1913, this work most certainly dates to 1909-13. The majority of his oeuvre was done in watercolor. However, by 1909 he had begun experimenting in oils—with the bulk of his oils having been created after 1913 when he lived in New York—making this a rarer Kentucky-period example. The most likely location for this piece would be Elkhorn Creek, given the time period the work was painted and its focus, a favorite subject of Sawyier. A possibly original price of $25.00 is written on the back of the board in pencil. Sawyier’s oils were known to have been advertised by C.F. Brower & Co., the Lexington firm that began representing him in 1908, for anywhere from $20 to $35 dollars during his lifetime.

  • Paul Sawyier Oil on Canvas

    Paul Sawyier Oil on Canvas

    Est: -

Paul Sawyier 17" x 14" oil on canvas of falling water cascading the stone steps of a hillside stream. Illustrated in Arthur Jones, The Art of Paul Sawyier, plate #53. Jones labels the work Catskills Stream. Painted by Sawyier while living in the Catskill mountains of New York State though probably a Kentucky scene painted from a photograph. Sawyier was well equipped, at this stage of his career, with photographic images of Kentucky scenes which he often used to paint various compositions for the home folks. A few Kentucky scenes painted in oil by Sawyier while living in the Catskills include: Across the Hills, Anderson County, Ky.; Lock Branch Valley near Lock 5 on the Ky. River; Cave Spring Farm, Lexington, Ky.; Kings Mill on the Dix River; Fish Trap Dam on the Dix River; and Church at Troy, Ky. among several other Kentucky compositions painted while living in the Catskill's. All previously mentioned exhibited at the Kentucky Governor's Mansion July 27th running to December 21st in 2015 showcasing only oil paintings by Sawyier. The certainty of all these scenes having been painted in New York is confirmed that all have Sawyier's later signature which he did not scribe until the spring of 1914 when in Brooklyn, after leaving Kentucky late in 1913. There is no confusing Sawyier's Ky. signature with his later N.Y. signature which has many degrees of separation from the other. Our scene is certainly a familiar geological stepped stream, often encountered, descending into the Kentucky River. In this example Sawyier paints his most accomplished element. Few artists equal his ability to capture water or snow. Here he paints in the foreground, a rushing run descending a hill side's stone steps after a heavy or extended rain. Few gifted artists would attempt a similar composition yet Sawyier mastered the task. In excellent condition with two small areas of inpaint which comprise less than a half square inch of fill. An image before cleaning reveals these two small spots. Framed to 26 3/4“ x 24“ in what almost certainly is the original frame. Circa 1916, Catskill Mountains of New York location of execution.

This work would have been executed in the Frankfort area prior to 1908 when Sawyier moved to a houseboat on the Kentucky River. While current research cannot pinpoint the exact location, he painted several other mill scenes with figures and similar architectural details that might lead to a future confirmation. Stedman’s Mill and Peak’s Mill, both on Elkhorn Creek, and Benson Creek are possible locations. Best known for his watercolors, Sawyier used gouache for this work. Although he did not often use the medium, his gouache work tended to be among his superior paintings, including Old Capitol Hotel Portico, the cover piece of Arthur Jones’ seminal book on Sawyier.
