  • John Savitsky Drawing - Miner
    Apr. 18, 2025

    John Savitsky Drawing - Miner

    Est: $400 - $600

John "Jack" Savitsky (American, 1910-1991). Portrait of a miner. Pencil and marker drawing on paper, 1983. Signed and dated at lower right. A fascinating drawing by Jack Savitsky - an American Folk Artist who notably worked for more than thirty years in the coal mines of Lansford, Pennsylvania - depicting a scene from his daily life, perhaps even a self-portrait: a miner in profile facing right with train tracks and a house in the background. The strong composition is complemented by stark lines and minimalist imagery, all set behind glass in a custom matte and wooden frame. Size of drawing: 4.5" W x 6.5" H (11.4 cm x 16.5 cm); of frame: 9" W x 11" H (22.9 cm x 27.9 cm) John "Jack" Savitsky (1910-1991) was a self-taught American folk artist celebrated for his vibrant and heartfelt depictions of life in the coal mining regions of northeastern Pennsylvania, where he himself worked for over three decades. Forced into retirement due to black lung disease, Savitsky turned to art, capturing the daily lives of miners and their families, rural landscapes, and occasional religious or whimsical scenes with a direct and honest style. Using bright colors and simple forms, his paintings and drawings on canvas, wood, and even found materials offer a charming and poignant glimpse into a specific time and place, earning him recognition as a significant figure in 20th-century folk art. Provenance: private Rochester, Minnesota, USA collection, acquired from 1990 -1998 All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. • Jack Savitsky Drawing - "Payday 2 Dollers a Day" (1981)
    Apr. 18, 2025

Jack Savitsky Drawing - "Payday 2 Dollers a Day" (1981)

    Est: $600 - $900

John "Jack" Savitsky (American, 1910-1991). "Pay Day... 2 Dollers a Day" drawing on paper, 1981. Signed and dated at lower right. Jack Savitsky's poignant drawing, titled "Pay Day... 2 Dollers a Day," offers a surprisingly lighthearted glimpse into the lives of laborers in Silver Creek, Pennsylvania, circa 1925. Rendered in a simple, direct style characteristic of Outsider art, the composition depicts a line of figures, presumably miners, moving with a hint of anticipation towards the "Silver Creek P.A. 1925" paymaster's window, where a grinning paymaster awaits. The workers, each subtly individualized by their headwear, also sport faint smiles, suggesting a shared moment of relief and perhaps camaraderie at the prospect of receiving their wages. In the background, a row of modest houses and industrial buildings under a gently sketched sky provide a sense of place and the context of their labor in this specific Pennsylvania community. Size of drawing: 11.5" W x 8.5" H (29.2 cm x 21.6 cm); of frame: 18.25" W x 15.75" H (46.4 cm x 40 cm) The handwritten title and the artist's signature and date ("SAVITSKY...81") ground the work in a later reflection on this historical moment, yet the pervasive smiles offer a touch of unexpected optimism amidst the depiction of everyday labor. The drawing's unpretentious honesty, coupled with this subtle undercurrent of cheerfulness in an ordinary event, elevates it to a quiet commentary on human resilience and the small joys found even in simple routines. About the Artist: Jack Savitsky is among America's most impressive self-taught artists. After completing the sixth grade, he went to work in the coal mines of northeastern Pennsylvania. Four decades in the mines resulted in black lung disease; so in 1960, Savitsky retired and began to pursue art. According to the Archives of American Art, "Jack Savitsky worked in the coal mines of Lansford, Pennsylvania, for more than forty years. He enjoyed painting as a child and remembered that 'instead of doing ABCs,' he would draw pictures of cats and dogs. During his off hours, he painted signs on windows and trucks and created murals for local speakeasies. By the time he was in his fifties, he suffered from 'black lung' and was unable to find work and so devoted all of his time to painting." (source: Jack Savitsky, Oral History, 1990, Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution) Savitsky’s work is held in the permanent collections of many museums including the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the American Folk Art Museum and curators have discussed his art as creating a record of America's past while honoring the working class. For example, Jo Ann Cotz of Seton Hall University stated, "Savitsky celebrates the dignity of work and working class people with masterful simplicity, honesty and a reverence for the community he was a part of. We thank him for sharing his vision with us."
