  • Jacob Savery the Elder, A Village Landscape with Hunters
    May. 21, 2016

Jacob Savery the Elder, A Village Landscape with Hunters

    Est: €30,000 - €35,000

Monogrammed lower left: IS. (above this presumably inscribed "F.B.F:") Certificate Luuk Pijl, Dokkum 17.12.2010. Jakob Savery the Elder was the brother of the landscape and animal painter Roelant Savery, and a pupil of Hans Bol in Mechelen. Savery was principally a miniaturist and draughtsman, and very few of his paintings have survived. His Flemish landscapes are narrative in style in the tradition of Brueghel, but use a much more vivid colour palette and rapid brushwork. They also display parallels to the landscapes of his brother Roelant, who was also his pupil. This small-format landscape has been painted in fine but sketchy brushstrokes. The foliage is painted summarily or using stippling effects highlighted in pale green and brown. With the exception of the faces, the millimetre-tall hunters on the lower left edge of the work are painted in exquisite detail. Savery has arranged the figures so that they grow smaller from left to right, eventually fading to become the small coloured dots we see before the village church.

    LANDSCAPE WITH ORPHEUS

    Est: €50,000 - €70,000

JACOB I SAVERY, LANDSCAPE WITH ORPHEUS, Oil on panel, 45 x 74 cm Confirmed by Isabelle de Jaegere, director of Broelmuseum in Kortrijk, as a work by Jacob I. Savery.
