Jacob Savry, Antique Handcolor Engraved Mediterranean Map

    Est: $200 - $800

This captivating 17th-century handcolored engraved map, titled Geographische beschryvinge van de Wandelingen der Apostelen ende de Reysen Pauli, is a masterwork by renowned Dutch cartographer Jacob Savry. The map, crafted with exquisite detail and artistry, chronicles the Mediterranean region, depicting the travels of the Apostles, particularly the missionary journeys of St. Paul. Jacob Savry was a Dutch engraver and cartographer from the Golden Age of cartography, a time when maps were not only geographic tools but also artistic expressions of knowledge and faith. This map exemplifies Savry's meticulous craftsmanship, blending geographical accuracy with rich biblical storytelling. The central map delineates the Mediterranean basin, extending from Southern Europe to the Middle East, with remarkable precision. Surrounding the map are vignettes illustrating key moments in the Apostolic journeys, bringing the narrative to life. These scenes offer a visual complement to the map's religious and educational purpose, serving as a didactic tool for audiences of the period. The inscriptions on the map are in Dutch, reflecting the Protestant Reformation's emphasis on disseminating religious knowledge through vernacular languages. This focus made maps like Savry's both valuable cultural artifacts and significant religious tools during the 17th century. Sight size: 19.50"L x 13.75"H. Frame dimensions: 30.50"L x 24.75"H x 1.25"W. Artwork can be unframed and rolled for shipment. Jerusalem, Holy Land. Jacob Savry, De Heylige en Wytvermaerde Stadt Ierusalem, Eerst Genaemt Salem, 1648 (dated). Hand Color. This detailed bird's-eye view is based on Claes Janszoon Visscher's depiction of Jerusalem, one of the most popular plans of the ancient walled city during the seventeenth century. While it is imaginary, it provides great detail of the city walls and streets, with 40 principal sites numbered and keyed to a table in a cartouche at bottom left. Biblical scenes are shown on the hillside in the foreground including the crucifixion. Solomon's Temple is at upper center, and Herod's Palace is located at the far left. Dutch text on verso.
