Albumen print, pasted down to period card, image size 210 x 272mm, card size 250 x 315mm, with manuscript title 'Court of Justice' lower margin recto, pencil caption and bibliographic reference verso. This image, originally published as number 30 in Saunders' Portfolio of Sketches of Chinese Life and Character, 1871, depicts a Chinese court scene with two defendants kneeling before a magistrate. "The presiding magistrate occupies the bench, and on either side are his clerks. The prosecutor, who in this instance holds some small official preferment, is seated to the right of the picture, and the accused are making their statement with profuse ko-tow-ing." Some captioned in ink below images on mount. - - Aside from various portraits and genre scenes, this collection includes some attractive views of China, namely a view of the port of Shanghai seen from the German consulate, the great Pagoda in the Imperial Winter Garden in Beijing and Pazhou Pagoda in Guangzhou.     WILLIAM SAUNDERS (1832-1892) An album entitled Sketches of Chinese Life and Character. An extraordinary album with 50 hand-colored photographs depicting exotic scenes in Shanghai and a host of occupational studies. Albumen prints, 9 1/4x8 3/4 inches (23.5x22.2 cm.), and the reverse, in an assortment of oval, arch-topped and rectilinear formats; each with a printed caption label with the print number affixed to mount recto. With 2 additional mounted albumen photographs, the first of a Chinese professional (a banker?) who is depicted with his large family, and the second a group portrait in which this same official is shown with Asian and Western professionals, which is inscribed "Yours tc, Clapp & Co.," in ink, on mount verso. Oblong small folio, 1/4 morocco, worn; contents tight. 1871-72
