He became very active in graphic design of all kinds during the 1930s, producing posters that were not only effective, but even quite startling by the standards of the period. Here, in a design for the PLM railroad, Satomi shows his mastery of graphic expression. The bold red letters juxtapose the diagonal thrust of the train as it rushes out of the darkness towards the bull’s eye of the sun. (Art Deco; Travel; Railway)

Condition A-: expert overpainting and restoration at edges and in lower text. Japanese-born Satomi moved to Paris in 1922, where he studied at the École des Beaux Arts. For a short period of time, he worked as an assistant to Cassandre in his studio. This experience, combined with his own strong sense of design, helped him gain commissions in both France and Japan. Here, he depicts the Nippon Yusen Kaisha Line's Chichibu Maru, which had its maiden voyage in 1930 and primarily made the crossing between Yokohama and San Francisco. Commandeered by the Japanese government during the war, the vessel was sunk while serving as a troopship in 1943. Its speed and direction are suggested by the arrow enveloping it. One of Satomi's rarest posters, we have not found another copy at auction in the last 10 years. Weallans p. 144.

Here that approach concisely sums up the golfoholic's world view, in which every hole is seen as a putting challenge, and life itself consists only of the expansive fairway. (Modern; Sports)

A powerful, Machine Age image of a train seen from above, emerging from the darkness and rushing towards a bright yellow sunburst en route to the Riviera. Intriguingly, this is one of the very few posters for the Cote d'Azur that does not depict any of the blue sea from which the area derives its name. Riviera 11, Train 279.
