He exhibited for forty years in the Sala Parés in Barcelona, and also showed his work in other Spanish cities, as well as in the United States. In 1966 he was awarded the Sant Jordi prize by the Diputació de Barcelona, and two years later the medal of honor at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris. In 1980 he became a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi, and in 1993 he was awarded the Quadern Prize of the Fundació Amics de les Arts i de les Lletres de Sabadell. Roca Sastre developed a figurative style of intimate themes, applying a personal and subjective look to his interior scenes as well as to his urban and natural landscapes. Since his death, retrospectives of Josep Roca's work have been held at La Pedrera and the Muncunill (Terrassa), Oriol (Barcelona) and Juan Oliver Maneu (Palma de Mallorca) galleries. His work is preserved in the National Museum of Art of Catalonia.

"Roofs" Oil on canvas. Signed. Signed and dated 1971 on the back. 130 x 195 cm. This painting was part of the large retrospective exhibition held at the Muncunill hall in Terrassa and in the Gaudí hall in the Caixa de Catalunya Cultural Centre in La Pedrera in 1999. It is reproduced on page 44 of the catalogue. On the back are scraps of the label from the Sala Parès in Barcelona and that of the loan of the painting for its display in the aforementioned exhibition. Provenance: Private collection, Barcelona. The catalogue of the 1999 retrospective exhibition is of great interest due to the paintings reproduced in it and the texts by Daniel Giralt-Miracle and Carme Riera, which include some quotes from the artist. In order to shed light on his way of understanding painting and expressing himself through it, we would like to highlight the following: According to the master, "to understand an environment, in this case, my city, there is nothing like experiencing it intimately. I like to stroll and observe its most unusual aspects: a corner, a fragment of a facade, a rooftop, the hallway at home, any piece of wall..." Josep Roca-Sastre, son of the renowned lawyer Ramón María Roca-Sastre and grandson of the famous architect Lluís Muncunill, was a prominent Catalan painter. His artistic career began in Paris in 1956, where he was granted a scholarship for two years by the Institut Français and won the first prize in the Jeune Peinture competition. Throughout his career, he specialised in figurative works with urban and intimate themes, showcasing a highly personal style that reflected his inner world, influenced by modernism and his own corner of the world -his studio in the Eixample district of Barcelona. In addition to his work as a painter, Roca-Sastre was a full member of the Sant Jordi Catalan Royal Academy of Fine Art in Barcelona from 1980. Throughout his career, he received significant awards, including the Sant Jordi Prize from the Provincial Council of Barcelona in 1966, the Medal of Honour from the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris in 1968, and the Quadern Award from the Sabadell Foundation of the Friends of Arts and Letters in 1993. 20th century Art Reference bibliography: - Giralt-Miracle, Daniel y Riera, Carme.
