  • John Nost Sartorius,  The kill
    Jul. 19, 2023

    John Nost Sartorius,  The kill

    Est: £4,000 - £6,000

John Nost Sartorius,  British 1759-1828-  The kill;  oil on canvas, 46 x 76.5 cm.  Provenance:  with Arthur Ackermann & Sons, London (according to label attached to the frame).  with The Parker Gallery, London (according to label attached to the lower horizontal stretcher bar).  Lady Alexandra Naldera Metcalfe, CBE (1904-1995).  By descent to the present owner. Note:  John Nost Sartorius was a member of a dynasty of sporting painters, as the son of Francis Sartorius (1734-1804) and the grandson of John Sartorius (c.1700-c.1780). His patrons included a number of important contemporaries, including the Prince of Wales (1762-1830), Charles James Fox (1749-1806), and Sir Charles Bunbury (1740-1821), a significant figure in 19th-century British horseracing. The present work exhibits the tendencies which define Sartorius's output, including the sinuous curves of the horses' necks and an abundance of small hunting dogs below.  Lady Alexandra Naldera Metcalfe (née Curzon) was the third daughter of George Curzon, 1st Marquess Curzon of Kedleston and Viceroy of India, and Lord Curzon's first wife, the American mercantile heiress, Mary Victoria Curzon, Baroness Curzon of Kedleston (née Leiter). She was named after her godmother, Queen Alexandra and her place of conception, Naldehra, India. She and her two older sisters were the subjects of a biography by Anne de Courcy in 'The Viceroy's Daughters: The Lives of the Curzon Sisters'.

Sartorius pinx' and inscribed 'Eclipse by Marske' oil on canvas 34.5 x 42cm Footnote: Provenance: Thomas Miller Whitehead, sold to John Dunn Gardner (1811-1908) on 11th May 1891 for £120 with its pair of Smolensko, Thence by descent Exhibited: Grosvenor Gallery, Sports Exhibition, 1890, no. 225, lent by Thomas Miller Whitehead Eclipse, the most famous racehorse of the English turf by Marske out of Spiletta, was foaled during the great eclipse of the 1st of April 1764 at the stud of the Duke of Cumberland. At first, he displayed no remarkable character except bad temper (and interestingly in most portrayals of him he is shown with his head down and ears back). He first ran as a 5-year old on 3rd of May 1769 at Epsom in a race of 4-mile heats, winning easily at 4 to 1 on. For the 2nd heat, an Irish gambler Dennis O’Kelly made a wager that he would place all the horses, pronouncing as he did so, the most famous phrase in racing history: “Eclipse first, the rest nowhere.” Standing at just over 16 hands and of bright chestnut colour, Eclipse won all 18 of his races, usually beating his opponents by 10 or 20 lengths. He was retired early in 1770 mainly due to the lack of credible competitors, to the stud of O’Kelly who had bought him in two stages for 1750 guineas. His stud fee was 50 guineas a mare and he is believed to have sired in the region of 350 winners. Eclipse died in 1789 aged 24 following an attack of colic, when he was dissected by Charles Vial de Saint Bel, who published in 1791 An Essay on the Geometrical Proportions of Eclipse , in which he stated that it was worthy of notice “that the heart weighed 14 pounds”. His skeleton belonging to the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons is on loan to the National History Museum.

John Nost Sartorius (British, 1759-1828) An Equestrian portrait of the 3rd Duke of Grafton (1735-1811) riding his hunter to covert, attended by his mounted groom, an extensive landscape beyond signed lower left 'Sartorius / Pinxt / 1786' oil on canvas 70 x 88cm Footnote: Provenance: Thomas Miller Whitehead, sold to John Dunn Gardner (1811-1908) on 23rd March 1872 for £25, Thence by descent The landscape almost certainly represents that of the Duke's estate at Wakefield on the borders of South Northamptonshire and North Buckinghamshire, near Stoney Stratford. The land, known as the Honour of Grafton, remained a Crown estate until 1706 when it passed along with the Rangership of Whittlewood Forest to the 2nd Duke who was grandson of King Charles II by his mistress Barbara Villiers, Duchess of Cleveland. The country thereafter became known as The Grafton where successive dukes maintained a pack of hounds and were invariably Master.

JOHN NOST SARTORIUS (BRITISH 1755-1828) A BAY MILITARY HORSE OR CHARGER, CAPARISONED WITH A MILITARY-STYLE SHEEPSKIN, SHABRAQUE AND HEADBAND, POSSIBLY RUSSIAN, A MILITARY ENCAMPMENT BEYOND

    Est: £500 - £800

signed and dated "Sartorius 179 3(?)" right of the horse oil on canvas (Dimensions: 23 x 29 cm) (23 x 29 cm) Footnote: Provenance: Wood Dalling Hall, Norfolk This is a portrait of a charger (possibly an officer's charger) of the pre-Waterloo era. The 'blanket' the horse is wearing is known as a shabraque and the black piece over the pommel is known as a sheepskin. In the British Army of the period, the shabraque's colour usually matched that of the regiment's facing colour. So, for example, the 1st Life Guards' tunics were red, but their facing colour was blue - as were their shabraques. This is not, however, a universal rule. In the British cavalry of the period, only The Blues and the 10th Light Dragoons (later Hussars) had officers' shabraques that were any colour other than blue (both had red shabraques) and the Kettledrummer of the 2nd Life Guards whose shabraque was white. From the mid-18th century onwards, all British Army (cavalry, infantry, artillery and support arms) officers' shabraques were edged with gold lace. We are grateful to Christopher Joll for his assistance with the catalogue entry. Condition report: Oil on canvas which has been lined. An old tear at the top of the canvas has been repaired. Retouchings are fairly well matched to the original. The varnish has yellowed and is dirty. There is wear to the gilding on the frame.

Basset was baptized at Charlbury, Oxfordshire on 7 September 1757 and was educated at Harrow School (1770–71), Eton College (1771–74) and King's College, Cambridge (1775). In 1777 he left university early to perform a Grand Tour in Italy, with Rev. William Sandys acting as his Cicerone. In Rome he had his portrait painted by Pompeo Batoni, who did not finish it until after Basset's departure. It was despatched to England on board the Westmorland , which was seized by the French and sold to the Spanish. Two portraits of him by Batoni are today in the collections of the Prado and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, Madrid. Condition report: Lined. Old labels to the reverse.
