Oil on canvas, relined England, circa 1800 George William Sartorius (1759-1828) - British still life and animal painter Signed 'W. Sartorius fecit' lower left on the edge of the table Dimensions: 92 x 72 cm Wooden frame: 104 x 83 cm Good condition A typical hunting still life of the artist. The current highest auction record for a similar oil painting by Sartorius is €18,000 The high artistic quality of the present painting by George William Sartorius (1759-1828) becomes evident especially in the plumage of the chicken and the sparrows as well as in the fur of the rabbit. The soft-looking surfaces contrast with the various, partly plain surfaces of the vegetables and the fish. The elaborate lighting enhances the three-dimensional effect of single elements in the painting. Condition: The color surface shows some craquelure and in places abrasion of the paint. The canvas has been relined. Inspection under UV light reveals various areas of retouching within the depiction and along the edges. Otherwise good overall impression. The frame has minor wear. The image dimensions are 92 x 72 cm, and the wooden frame measures 104 x 83 cm. George William Sartorius (1759-1828) George William Sartorius came from a dynasty of artists that portrayed mainly hunting scenes. George William specialized in animal depictions and still lifes. Between 1773 and 1779, he exhibited at the Society of Artists of Great Britain, which was modeled after the Paris Salon.
