          Antoine Sartorio (1885-1988) Two mascarons in verdigris-colored metal H 75 x W Model created circa 1924 H 75 x W 70 x D 35 cm Provenance: Sotheby's, September 25, 2019, lot 27 ALB antiquites Literature: Emile Ripert, "Le grand theatre de Marseille", L'Architecture, February 25, 1925, pp. 41-48, one of the two mascarons illustrated fig. 53 These figures were made by Antoine Sartorio for Marseille's municipal opera house, destroyed by fire in 1919. Rebuilt by the architects Castel, Ebrard and Raymond in 1924, the decor created by a team of artists ,including Emile-Antoine Bourdelle, is a major witness to Art deco in Marseille. Nice FRANCE , Inauguration de la Palais de la Méditerranée , Nice , 1929, a plated bronze Art Déco medal by A. Sartorio after C.M. Dalmas, semi-robed female standing facing, two seahorses behind her to left, chased by two seagulls, rev . frontal elevation of the Palais, edge impressed bronze and cornucopia, 69mm, 116.56g. Extremely fine and toned, very rare; in original brown fitted case [this somewhat scuffed] £90-£120 --- Provenance: bt J. Lis The Palais de la Méditerranée, 13-15 Promenade des Anglais, Nice, was constructed in 1927-8 and opened in January 1929. Post-War, the casino fell on troubled times due to mismanagement, following which the original structure was demolished in May 1990.
