    • Juan de Sariñena (c. 1545 - 1619) after Scipione Pulzone (Gaeta, 1544 - Rome, 1598) "St. Clare of Assisi"
      Feb. 29, 2024

Juan de Sariñena (c. 1545 - 1619) after Scipione Pulzone (Gaeta, 1544 - Rome, 1598) "St. Clare of Assisi"

      Est: €5,000 - €7,000

Juan de Sariñena (c. 1545 - 1619) after Scipione Pulzone (Gaeta, 1544 - Rome, 1598) "St. Clare of Assisi" Oil on canvas 91,5 x 71,5 cm 5.000 - 7.000 € It is documented that Sariñena spent several years in Italy, specifically in Rome, where he approached Pulzone, Vanni or Venusti, imbued with their "counter-maniera", a style emanating from the religious spirit imposed by the Counter-Reformation, which reacted to the prevailing Mannerism, looking for a freer and closer way to express religious sentiment with depth. Thus, when Sariñena returned to Valencia, where he settled in 1580, he laid the foundations of naturalism to the detriment of the mannerist formulas of Juan de Juanes. In the city of the Turia he fits perfectly with the counter-reformist ideology of San Juan de Ribera, imprinting on the devotional works that the patriarch commissioned him the characters learned from the Roman masters: simplicity in the composition, austerity and simplicity. This is exactly the case of this Saint Clare, which is a version, as he did with other works commissioned by his patron, of the Pulzone painting that was in his collection and is still preserved in the Museum of the Patriarch's College.

      Est: €9,000 - €12,000

Oil on canvas. Provenance: Valencia, former collection of the Counts of Parcent; Madrid, private collection. Bibliography: - EL QUEXIGAL. The house and its contents, property of the Hohenlohe family that will be auctioned by Sotheby Parke Bernet & Co. Sucursal en España, Madrid, 1979, no. 24 (as the work of Valdés Leal); Puig Sanchis, I. and Franco Llopis, B., “Juan de Sariñena and Luis Beltrán, two icons of spirituality in Valencian art: appreciations regarding the canvas preserved in the Ibercaja-Camón Aznar Museum in Zaragoza, Valencian Art Archive , no. 95, 2014, p. 31-46, Figs. 8. Juan Sariñena was a figure of capital importance in the development of Valencian Baroque painting. His apprenticeship in Rome, between 1570 and 1575, allowed him to soak up the different currents that converged in the city during those years, such as Michelangelo's mannerism or Reformed painting, breaking with his innovative style with the Joanesque tradition that was perpetuated by the numerous followers of the famous Juan de Juanes. From 1579 until his death in 1619, Sariñena occupied a hegemonic place in the city of Valencia, where he would come to occupy the position of Painter of the City and receive the most important commissions by the clergy, the nobility and the ruling classes, his most notable undertaking being the mural decoration of the Sala Nova de la Generalitat. Here, along with other painters chosen by him, he was in charge of portraying the various estates that made up the governing bodies of said corporation, all of them portrayed “live”. This set, as well as the different portraits he made on behalf of Patriarch Juan De Ribera for his College of Corpus Christi, earned him the fame of an excellent portraitist. A magnificent example can be found in this painting that represents Saint Luis Beltrán. Thanks to the location of a photograph in the Mas Archive (digital no.: 02872003) we know that it is a work that belonged to the collection of the Counts of Parcent, confirming its Valencian origin. We know that in 1979 the work was on the Quexigal estate, owned by the Hohenlohe family, and was put up for sale by Sotheby's auction house as the work of the painter Valdés Leal. The number 372 that appears on canvas and stretcher on the back, It probably refers to one of the inventories of this collection. The figure of the saint precisely follows the model painted by Sariñena in 1584 commissioned by Patriarch Juan de Ribera, for which he received 70 reales. In the painting we find the typical brushstroke of Sariñena, with a loose line, in the Venetian style, and his chromatic palette of bright colors. The features of the saint's face are the same as those of the portrait executed for the Patriarch Ribera, showing his gaunt face with extremely marked cheekbones, which Sariñena took directly from life on the saint's deathbed commissioned by the Dominican religious community. His hands have the peculiar treatment conferred by the painter and are thin, elongated and lacking in articulation without showing marks of veins or tendons, making the effect that has been called “empty glove”. Unlike the work preserved in the College of Corpus Christi, this painting has a landscape in the background and is completed with an inscription that reinforces the sense of "see effigies", as a true representation of the image of the saint, recalling his date of birth. on January 1, 1526 and that of his death on October 9, 1581. Measurements: 117 x 90 cm.
