John Singer Sargent Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Lithographer, Porträtmaler, Genre Painter, Landscape painter, Water colorist, b. 1856 - d. 1925

John Singer Sargent was a prolific artist active in the late 19th and early 20th century. John Singer Sargent's paintings are noteworthy for their range of styles. Part of the reason for his wide-ranging talent was his exposure to many cultures and mentors. Born in 1856 to American parents living in Florence, Italy, he studied under tutors in Europe and the UK.

Sargent circulated in the highest strata of European social society for 40 years, producing hundreds of portraits for the social elite. Sargent's portraits are notable for capturing the glamor and elegant bearing of his subjects in a bold and lifelike style. Later in life, John Singer Sargent's paintings included murals and landscapes in both oil and watercolor. John Singer Sargent drawings are renowned for bold strokes capturing life and movement. Many collections worldwide feature his and other portrait paintings for sale.

'Apollo.' 1920. Collotype on paper. A study, originally for the mural at the Boston Public Library, and was printed by the Guild of Boston Artists when each artist was the Guild's featured member. Printed signature bottom left. 30 x 26" In 1916, John Singer Sargent met Thomas Eugene McKeller (1890-1962), a young black elevator attendant, at Boston's Hotel Vendome, and McKeller became an important model in Sargent's major artistic commissions in and around Boston. His depictions of McKeller were the basis for both male and female figures of gods and goddesses. The nature of these depictions and their transformation from the model to the paintings call attention to questions of race, class, and sexuality, and the questions they raise are as relevant today as they were in Gilded Age Boston.

John Singer Sargent (American, 1856-1925) Portrait of Aline Wythes, née Thorold, (1869-1951), bust-length, 1915 charcoal on paper signed John S. Sargent (lower left) and dated 1915 (lower right) 23 1/2 x 18 1/2 inches. This work has been reviewed and accepted by the John Singer Sargent Catalogue Raisonné vetting committee as a genuine work of the artist.  Provenance: By repute, Aline Thorold (1869-1951) m. Ernest James Wythes (1868-1949) at Copped Hall, Essex, until 1917 and The Wood House, Essex, thereafter and by descent to Barbara Dorothy Wythes (1896-1984) m. (Francis) Guy Robert Elwes (1895-1966) at The Wood House, Essex until 1961 and Ham Spray House, Marlborough, thereafter and by descent to Aline Mary Margaret (Elwes) McDonnell (1923-2023) m. Hubert McDonnell Jr. (1919-2004), Greenwich, Connecticut, and thence by descent Literature: David McKibbin, Sargent's Boston, with an essay & biographical summary & a complete check list of Sargent's Portraits, Boston, 1956, p. 132 Aline Thorold (d. 1951), the daughter of Sir John Thorold, 12th Bart. a Conservative politician, and the Hon. Alexandra Willoughby, was brought up at Syston Park in Lincolnshire. In 1894 she married the wealthy landowner and yachtsman Ernest James Wythes (1868–1949) [1.], with whom she had three daughters. [2.] Wythes had inherited Copped Hall near Epping in Essex from his grandfather, the railway constructor and property owner George Wythes. An imposing Georgian mansion on the site of what had been a royal hunting lodge, it was to be extensively remodeled by Wythes and his wife, and filled with priceless furniture and rare works of art. [3.] A new wing and a free-standing conservatory were added and an Italian garden created. Sadly, the house burned out in 1917 (it has been partially restored in recent times), and the couple moved into a smaller house on the estate, Wood House, which Wythes had built in 1895 and which later belonged to the racing driver Rod Stewart. Aline Wythes was awarded an OBE (officer of the Order of the British Empire) in 1918, presumably for war work. Sargent had donated two empty frames to the British Red Cross in 1915 to be auctioned to the highest bidder for portrait drawings in charcoal to fill them. Wythes bought one of these frames for over £600. [4.] What happened to the other frame is uncertain. [1.] Wythes served as high sheriff of Essex and as a magistrate for over fifty years. He was a round-the-world yachtsman and a keen member of the Royal Yacht Squadron. He supported local causes, adding an aisle and tower to St John’s Church in Epping. He was said to be a man of a few words but good deeds. [2.] One of their daughters Barbara Wythes married Francis Elwes, son of Lady Winefride Elwes whom Sargent drew around 1909 (cat. no. 222) [3.] A Chinese imperial jade brush pot from the Wythes collection sold for over £1.5 million at auction in 2012. [4.] This was reported in the New York Times, 16 April 1915, and confirmed by Aline Wythes in a letter to David McKibbin of 10 June 1947 (McKibbin papers).  Pictured: An 1807 engraving of Copped Hall, S. Rawle from a drawing by S. Shepherd. Aline Elwes McDonnell and Family, circa 1954.

John Singer Sargent (American, 1856-1925) - Portrait of Mrs. Esperanza Conill de Zanetti

            Est: $20,000 - $30,000

John Singer Sargent (American, 1856-1925) - Portrait of Mrs. Esperanza Conill de Zanetti Signed and dated ‘John S. Sargent 1924’ across the top, charcoal on laid paper laid down to board Sheet size: 23 7/8 x 17 in. (60.6 x 43.2cm) Provenance Collection of Esperanza Conill de Zanetti, the Sitter. By descent in the family to the present owner.  The Collection of Charles Virginia Bowden, San Antonio, Texas. The Estate of Charles and Virginia Bowden, San Antonio, Texas. By descent. Private Collection, Tennessee. Literature David McKibbin, Sargent's Boston, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, 1956, p. 132 (referenced). Lot Essay Mrs. Esperanza Conill de Zanetti, a New York City socialite and muse of the early 20th century, captivated artists from Joaquín Sorolla to John Singer Sargent. While Sorolla's 1909 oil portrait remains her most famous depiction, she modeled for Sargent on at least one occasion, as evidenced by the present lot. Fifteen years removed from Sorolla's striking, “Goyaesque” composition, Sargent's bust-length rendering is a testament to Mrs. Zanetti's enduring beauty and elegance. In his later years, after about 1907, Sargent embraced charcoal as his preferred medium for portrait commissions–a shift that allowed him to break free from the time-consuming constraints of oil painting. These works, while still amply detailed (note, for instance, Mrs. Zanetti's dark eyes, eyebrows, and hair), introduced a looser, more relaxed style, owing to their brisk execution. In contrast to the formal grandeur of his earlier oils, Sargent's intimate, expressive Portrait of Mrs. Esperanza Conill de Zanetti homes in on the psychological essence of his sitter.
