Alan Saret New York, (b.1944) Ensou Curent of the Spirit of the Seeding, 1970 mixed media on paper signed, titled, and dated verso. Biography from Spanierman Gallery (retired) A noted artist of the Post-Minimalist generation, Alan Saret works in a variety of media. In addition to his drawings and sculptures, which reveal his unique feeling for line and color, Saret also creates environmental installations, frequently merging the disciplines of architecture, ecology, and theater. Saret was born in New York City in 1944. He later studied architecture at Cornell University, working under the renowned architect, Paolo Soleri. After graduating from Cornell in 1966, he attended studio classes at Hunter College and began to produce his first sculptures and drawings (1967-1968). He had his first solo exhibition in 1968 at the Bykert Gallery in New York. During 1969, Saret held the position of Visting Artist in Sculpture at the University of California at Irvine. In the early 1970s, he travelled throughout Mexico, Europe, and North Africa. He also lived and worked in India (1971-1973). During the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s, Saret developed a reputation for his delicate wire mesh sculptures and for his equally graceful multi-pencil drawings. In recent years, he has drawn on his earlier training at Cornell to produce large-scale architectural plans of a highly visionary nature. He has also created many representational drawings and wire sculptures containing fantastic imagery inspired by Balinese art. Saret's recent environmental pieces have included such diverse objects as timber platforms, architectural pillars, and bathtubs. Alan Saret lives and works in New York City. He is represented in many public and private collections, including The Museum of Modern Art and The Whitney Museum of American Art, both in New York, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and The Art Gallery of Ontario, in Toronto. Ex-collection private collection, New Jersey. Saret (born 1944) was one of the founding proponents of process art in the late 1960s. The current work, one of a series of what Saret termed a "gang drawing," was created by the artist drawing with a fistful of color pencils. The result is a composition of gestural marks and a clearly evident artistic process.
