      Aug. 02, 2016

Sun Sanxi, Painting with Peonies and Scholar Rock, Qing

      Est: €1,100 - €1,430

Ink and colors on silk Mounted as scroll painting in a silk brocade frame China, Qing dynasty (1644-1911) Sun Sanxi (c. 1779-c. 1851) 孙三锡 - Chinese painter and seal artist Depiction of blooming pink and white peonies In the front a scholar rock On the right edge a tree with white flowers Inscription in the upper left edge: for Zhongyun/after the style of Wang Qingzhong/Sun Shanxi from Guishan (仲云二兄大人雅属/仿王勤中笔法/桂山孙三锡) Below three artist seals Handle with a wax seal Total dimensions: c. 196 x 64 cm Image size: c. 103.5 x 42 cm Good age related condition Provenance: Collection of Dr. Viktor Brodnig, President of the Austrian-Chinese Society The depicted peonies, a symbol of a beautiful and educated woman, appear in fresh colors and they are painted in Xieyi-style. The painting Xieyi-style, which means as much as ‘writing down the concept’, is discernible by its simple structure with fast-paced, expertly placed brush strokes. The naturalistic structure of the scholar stone is caused by the use of masterful, finely graduated ink and surrounded by black contours. The latter seems as a peaceful counterpoint to the vibrant plants around. Condition: The work is in good age related condition with slight signs of wear such as partly slight crease marks, partly little loss of silk, stains and traces of moisture. The total dimensions are 196 x 64 cm. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
