His artistic repertoire delves into rather distinctive themes and subjects, offering audiences a unique exploration of the weathered and decrepit. Santos’ choice of dilapidated settings and objects infuses his canvases with an evocative nostalgia, directing attention to elements nearly lost and in a state of decay. His canvases portray a range from shattered and aged objects to wilting leaves, utilizing a rusty and weathered palette. Santos masterfully taps into the sentimental chords of his audience, drawing focus on the contrast between old and new. This interplay between the decrepit and the aged palette evokes a sense of memories resurfacing, sparking a moment of reflection and reminiscence. In this exploration, what was once ‘forgotten’ emerges as the ‘found’—a familiar presence making its impact felt once again. (Jed Daya)

Born in 1960 in Metro Manila, Santos was exposed to the fine arts at a relatively young age, given that his father, Mauro Malang Santos, is considered to be one of the pillars of Philippine Art in the 20th century. Santos received his formal education in the arts at the University of the Philippines’ School of Fine Arts. Santos’ unique practice has proven to be successful not because of his namesake, but because of his own unique approach to art itself. In 1992, he was awarded the coveted Thirteen Artists Award by the Cultural Center of the Philippines. Aside from being a visual artist, Santos is also a respected gallerist, with his Quezon City space West Gallery considered one of the most respected and prestigious galleries in the Philippines today. Santos’ unique artistic practice is one that primarily explores our relationship with our surroundings. Though Santos’ style is varied and multifaceted, the very philosophy that his works operate on can be seen as a critique of our environment and how our experience primarily informs our relationship with it. From his Leaves series to his Derelict series, there is an inimitable touch of realism on display, his stylization of subjects an impeccable showing of creative genius. (J.D.)

Son of modernist master Mauro Malang Santos, Soler Santos is among the premiere contemporary artists of today. Obscure is his choice of themes, drawing inspiration from nature and natural forms to concoct his unique, alluring brand of art. Initially a magic realist, Santos’s technical proficiency has shone through in his works. From his Leaves series to his Derelict series, there is an inimitable touch of realism on display, his stylization of subjects an impeccable showing of creative genius. Done in acrylic, from 1988, this very piece, everbearing of that initial magic realist character, flaunts the artist’s refined yet youthful sensibilities.
