Roseta Santiago (American, b. 1946). Oil on canvas, ca. 2010. A stirring still-life by artist Roseta Santiago featuring a cow skull, a knife in its hide sheath, a strand of red beads, and a drum. The skull provides a haunting momento mori effect and harkens the works of other artists who have paid homage to New Mexico, the most famous being Georgia O'Keeffe. The ensemble of objects - skull, knife, and drum - speak to the history of New Mexico and the indigenous of the Southwest. According to the Autry Museum of the American West's description of Roseta Santiago's oeuvre, "She paints the beauty and integrity surrounding each of her subjectsusually objects that have been made by hand with primitive tools and resourcesand is a master storyteller about the images she paints." This painting certainly lives up to that description and is set in a lovely carved wood frame that complements it perfectly. She was also contracted to paint murals in twenty-three Bass Pro Shops premier sporting goods stores in the U.S., Puerto Rico, and Costa Rica. In 2000, after moving to Santa Fe, New Mexico, Santiago realized her dream of becoming a fine art painter. Self-taught, she paints every day. Mystery and light engulf the unique Western and Asian artifacts that are the subjects of her early body of work.
