      Italy, 19th cent. Janus-headed god of sleep, backed by wings, depicted as a bust of an alert, graceful youth, with another sleeping face above. Min. dam. Total height 61 cm, w. 44.5 cm. - Italian sculptor, trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, studied with Berthel Thorvaldsen in Rome and was appointed professor at the Academy in Florence in 1832. He created numerous funerary monuments and monumental sculptures, such as the statue of Michelangelo for one of the niches in the courtyard of the Uffizi. Lit.: Thieme/Becker 29/30, p. 427f.

      Emilio Santarelli (Italian, 1801-1886) Hypnos Marble sculpture on base, back signed Santarelli Emilio. Height 26 1/2 inches (67.3 cm). The Florentine sculptor Emilio Santarelli (1801-1886) received a stipend to study under Bertel Thorvaldson in Rome in 1824. He returned to work in Florence where, amongst other commissions, completed a statue of Michelangelo for the Uffizi in 1840. C
