MARCELIANO SANTA MARIA (Burgos, 1866-Madrid, 1952). "Saint Mary". Oil on canvas. Signed and located (Burgos), in the lower right corner. Measurements: 47,5 x 70 cm. In this work the artist captures a concrete moment located in the choir of the Cathedral of Burgos. Despite being an apparently traditional image due to the subject matter, the treatment of the scene is quite modern. The artist does not centre the image, but composes it diagonally, so that only a section of the choir of Burgos Cathedral is shown, and not the whole space, which adds dynamism to the scene. Furthermore, the attitudes of the figures are neither regal nor hieratic, but are shown in a natural manner: the altar boys and the priest who accompanies them, singing, and the religious who join in the image, concentrating on their tasks. It should also be noted that the pictorial treatment, although based on drawing, has been completed with a looser, freer brushstroke that gives greater expressiveness to this genre-themed image. A successful painter specialising in portraits, Castilian landscapes and history paintings, Marceliano Santa María attended the Provincial Academy of Drawing in Burgos, where he was taught by Isidro Gil and Evaristo Barrio. Together with his uncle, who always believed in his artistic ability, he moved to Madrid in 1885, with the intention of attending classes at the Círculo de Bellas Artes, Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. In the Spanish capital he attended the studio of the painter Manuel Domínguez Sánchez, which he shared with other young painters such as Fernando Álvarez de Sotomayor and Eduardo Chicharro Agüera. Also in 1885, thanks to a landscape study, he was awarded second prize at the Burgos Fine Arts Exhibition. He studied in Rome between 1891 and 1895 thanks to a grant from the Burgos provincial council. During his stay in Italy he painted one of his most famous works: The Triumph of the Holy Cross, which was exhibited at the Madrid International Exposition and the Chicago World's Fair (1933), where he won a single medal. After this success he continued to exhibit his works in the main Spanish capitals. In 1895 he settled in Burgos, and in 1900 he formed a school of painters who followed his style. Santa María focused most of his output on royal portraits, portraits of local aristocrats and bourgeoisie, and Castilian landscapes, which earned him the nickname of "Painter of Castile". Following his success during his lifetime, in 1934 Marceliano Santa María was appointed director of the School of Arts and Crafts in Madrid. In that year he was awarded the Medal of Honour at the National Fine Arts School. In 1943 he received the Extraordinary Gold Medal of the Círculo de Bellas Artes in 1943. During these years, he also became a mentor, protector and benefactor of young artists such as Luis Sáez Díez. Currently, the city of Burgos has a monographic museum dedicated to him. Marceliano Santa María's work can also be found in the Museums of Modern and Municipal Art in Madrid and Barcelona, in the Museum of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid, in the Army Museum in Toledo, in the Camón Aznar Foundation Museum in Zaragoza and other museums in Spain, Europe and America and in numerous private collections.
