Loo Foh Sang (b. 1944) Survival Of The Fittest, 2006

          Est: RM4,000 - RM7,000

"For me, I usually use natural materials such as feathers, leaves and petals. I also use nets and aluminium foil to enhance the visual effects." - Loo Foh Sang Loo Foh Sang has mastered the art of printmaking with over five decades of experience creating artworks with the medium. Survival Of The Fittest depicts a cockfighting scene executed using intaglio technique. On his website, Loo shares the technical process of intaglio print "in which the printmaker cuts the image into a metal surface using steel or diamond-tipped tool, or etches the image into the plate's surface with acid. The area below the surface holds the ink. As a damp paper is placed on the inked plate, the print is produced when the paper picks up the ink in the grooves as a press roller passes on top of it. This is the opposite of the relief technique and comes from the Italian word intagliare - "to cut into". Loo Foh Sang attended Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore from 1963 to 1965. He then pursued his art education at the Ecole Nationel Superieure des Beaux in Paris in 1966. After graduation, he remained there and was accepted to study printmaking under the tutelage of Stanley William Hayter, the English printmaker and painter who founded Atelier 17, widely known as the most influential print workshop of the 20th century. From 1996 onwards, Loo has organised three international Contemporary Printmaking Art Shows in Malaysia. In 2000, he was in the Jury Panel of the 3rd International Triennial of Graphic Arts, Macedonia. In the same year, he received an honourable mention and became an "in-house artist" at the Romania Art Museum. In 2009, he was awarded the Asia-Pacific Art Golden Award. And in the following year, he received the global Golden Brand Award. He has held 25 solo exhibitions locally and abroad since 1963. Loo established his own studio called Atelier 11 or Loo Foh Sang Art Eleven in Balakong, Selangor.

The bright veneer of blue all over with a floating temple-like monument set in stripes are set against the undulating designs of various geometric shapes as ground. Loo Foh Sang had learnt well, and more, from the intricate techniques innovated by Atelier 17 when he studied there in Paris and was an apprentice to its founder, Sir Stanley William Hayter. After Hayter's death in 1988, his main disciples, Hector Saunier and Juan Valladares, moved the experimental print workshop to another place under a new name, Atelier Centrepoint, but with all the original ideals intact. Like most graduates from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore (1973-1965), Loo continued his studies at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts and Atelier 17 in Paris, joining his girlfriend turned wife there. He was instrumental in setting up printmaking workshops at the Malaysian Institute of Art and later the Central Academy of Art. One of the more outstanding printmaking exponents, Loo had also organised three international contemporary printmaking exhibitions since 1996. Since 1963, he had 29 solos including those held at his gallery in Wisma Pauson, Puchong, Selangor. He has also taken part in more than 50 print exhibitions all over the world. Loo Foh Sang (b. 1944) The Man And The Woman,1967

          Est: RM1,500 - RM2,500

Loo Foh Sang’s 1967 The Man And The Woman absorbs loosely from the Futurists (like Gino Severini) and the obscure Section d’Or (Golden Section) group with the projection of mechanistic representations presaging the age of the robots. The notion was fueled by advanced printmaking techniques pushed by Sir Stanley William Hayter in his Atelier 17. Foh Sang studied under Hayter when he was simultaneously studying at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts in Paris (1966-69) after a stint at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Art in Singapore (1963-65). The dull brown tones also simulate the metal quality, rust et al, besides exuding a hard, detached exterior. “The symbiosis of Eastern and Western inclinations that has synthesised into Loo’s original style can be attributed to the influences of Cheong Soo-pieng and S.W. Hayter,” wrote Rahime Harun, a former director-general of the National Art Gallery Malaysia. Foh Sang is an accomplished master printmaker who apprenticed under Sir William Hayter at Atelier 17. He was accorded a retrospective-level exhibition, The Untiring Engraver, at Wisma Kebudayaan Soka Gakkai Malaysia in June 2014.
