§ Charles Sandison (b. 1969), Encyclopedie, 2010, Encyclopedie ou Dictionnaire raisonne des sciences, des arts et des metiers, 2010, computer code on LCD screen, number 4 from an edition of 5 plus 2 artist's proofs 65 x 110 x 12cm Provenance: The Collection of Lord Myners, former Chairman of the Board of Trustees at the Tate Northumberland born Charles Sandison is a prominent video artist celebrated for his pioneering work in digital media. His innovative installations, marked by algorithmically generated text and images, transform physical spaces into dynamic, evolving environments. Central to Sandison’s practice is his use of computer algorithms to create text and images that are in constant flux. This approach allows him to craft installations that are not static but perpetually changing, reflecting the fluid nature of data and information in the digital era. His work frequently explores themes of language, communication, nature, information flow, and what it means to be human. A defining feature of Sandison’s art is its immersive quality. His installations envelop viewers, creating environments that blur the lines between the physical and the virtual. This all-encompassing experience encourages viewers to engage deeply with the work, contemplating the intersection of technology, information, and human perception. Now living and working in Finland, Sandison's work has been exhibited in prestigious venues including the Venice Biennale, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, and at London's Tate Britain.
