The Golden Cockerel Press, 1935 Other Notes: Lettice Sandford was an engraver of the 1930s and 1940s, born in Herefordshire. She was taught the technique of wood engraving by Robert Day, and how to etch by Graham Sutherland. In 1929 she married the printer Christopher Sandford, and they ran the Boar's Head Press together, whose books were printed at the Chiswick Press. Lettice's engravings were featured in their first published books of 1931 and 1932. In 1933 Christopher bought the Golden Cockerel Press, which published the 'Golden Bed of Kydno'. Lettice also produced 19 copper engravings for The Song of Songs (1936) and 20 in zinc for The Golden Cockerel Greek Anthology (1937). We are grateful to Michael Campbell for his assistance with this catalogue entry.
