Carved powderhorn belonging to Samuel Gridley, intricately carved in scrimshaw with the fortifications at Fort George, with '[Sa]muel Gridley at Lake Geoge, Novr X9 1756', 330 mm in length, circumference at the mouth 210 mm, cut down at the mouth, and strapholes repunched, toning. CARVED FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR POWDERHORN FROM SAMUEL GRIDLEY. Samuel Gridley, likely born at Boston in 1734, and the son of Richard Gridley, who designed the battlements around Fort George, and would later serve as the first Chief Engineer for the U.S. Army, designing the battlements at Breed's Hill at the Battle of Bunker Hill.
