            VASILKOVSKIY and SAMOKISH, Lithograph, 1900

DMITRY IVANOVICH EVARNITSKIY (RUSSIAN-UKRAINIAN 1855-1940), author; and VASILKOVSKIY SERGEI IVANOVICH (RUSSIAN-UKRAINIAN 1854-1917) and SAMOKISH NIKOLAI SEMENOVICH (RUSSIAN-UKRAINIAN 1860-1944), artists, from IZ UKRAINSKOY STARINY. LA PETITE RUSSIE D`AUTREFOIS [Ukrainian Antiquity], (St. Petersburg: A.F. Marks, 1900). First edition original chromolithographic plate no. 19, full sheet measuring 41.2 x 32.5 cm (16 1/4 x 12 13/16 in.), signed in plate N. Samokish and S. Vasilkovskiy LOT NOTES Sergei Vasilkovsky was a prolific Ukrainian and Russian painter best known for his landscapes in the tradition of the Peredvizhnik movement (marked by an attentiveness to national history and imagery). Born in 1854 in Izium, he studied at the Kharkov Gymnasium under Dmitry Bezperchiy (a classmate of Taras Shevchenko). He then enrolled in the Kharkov Veterinary School, but was forced to stop his education due to financial troubles in 1873, and, for some time, worked as a clerk. In 1876-1885 Vasilkovsky studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts under well-known artists Mikhail Clodt von Jurgensburg and Vladimir Orlovsky. Upon graduating he traveled extensively throughout Ukraine (1883), documenting the tranquility and beauty of Ukrainian landscapes. In 1886 Vasilkovsky moved to France, took trips to England, Spain, Italy, South Africa and Germany. Impressed and inspired by foreign museum collections, he returned to painting Ukrainian landscapes with a newfound fervor. Wishing to remain artistically independent, Vasilkovsky never bound himself with memberships of artists’ collectives and groups. He did, however, participate in many group exhibitions in St. Petersburg, Kharkov, and Kiev. The artist’s first personal exhibition was organised in 1900 in Kharkov, where Vasilkovsky presented 120 of his works. He willed over 1340 of his works to the Museum of Archeology and Ethnography of Sloboda Ukraine, as well as a considerable amount of money for founding the Kharkov Art Museum, to which he left another 1500 works. In all, Vasilkovsky produced over 3000 artworks. Sadly, the majority were destroyed during World War II — currently, around 500 works survive in museum and private collections. Nikolai Samokish was a well-known Russian-Ukrainian (Soviet) painter and graphic artist best known for his military art and animal painting. Born in 1860 near Chernigov, Samokish received an excellent artistic education, but was nevertheless initially deferred from the Imperial Academy of Arts and studied military art under Bogdan Willewalde until his acceptance to the Academy one year later, in 1879. A quick learner, Samokish received several medals, as well as the Stroganov award, for his work and published a collection of lithographs. In 1884, one of his paintings was purchased by Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov for his gallery. During this time he worked primarily in the genre of military painting, but was also a prolific illustrator (producing over 1000 works) and teacher. In 1904 Samokish traveled as a correspondent, to the front lines of the Russo-Japanese war, where his works were published in ‘’Niva’’ and ‘’The Sun of Russia’’ (one of the most popular publications of Imperial Russia). Following the Revolution, Samokish became a member of AKhRR and completed a series of monumental canvases dedicated to the Revolution, while at the same time maintaining relationships with Ukrainian intelligentsia. In 1941, he became the recipient of the Stalin Prize. During the German occupation of Crimea in 1941-1944 Samokish remained in Simferopol, where he died in 1944. PROVENANCE INFORMATION This lot comes from the collection of Viktor Kholodkov (1948-2015), who fulfilled his passion for books, avant-garde design and paper memorabilia by devoting his life to collecting and dealing of prominent works of Russian graphic art of the first half of the 20th century. The dedicated collector acquired a multitude of books and artworks throughout decades, meticulously labeling and archiving every single item. Many came directly from the most preeminent artists of the time, as well as from their families and estates. He also possessed a vast number of drawings from the famous collection of another avant-garde enthusiast, Nikolai Khardzhiev. After leaving the USSR in 1989 and settling in California, Viktor continued his work as a Soviet art dealer and critic, actively publishing various articles and contributing to several major Russian avant-garde exhibitions across the U.S., such as the 1991 Russia Under Fire in the 40s on the West Coast and the 1992 Guggenheim exhibition The Great Utopia: The Russian and Soviet Avant-Garde. Kholodkov also contributed to the archives of the biggest American institutions. His sophisticated selection of over 2000 Russian sheet music covers was acquired by The Library of Congress, and an extensive amount of material related to VKhUTEMAS is now at the J. Paul Getty Museum.
