C. K. L. SAMARASINHA (1919-2003) CEYLON. 1948. 40 1/4x25 3/4 inches, 102 1/4x65 1/2 cm. Charles & Read Ltd., London. Condition B+ / A-: small tears and creases in margins; minor creases in image; pencil writing and ink stamp in lower left corner. Paper. One of three posters this artist is known to have designed promoting travel to the island off India's Southern coast, including one for Air Ceylon. Currently known as Sri Lanka, Ceylon was a British colony until it achieved its independence in 1948. The Ceylon Daily News from Friday September 24, 1948, pictures this poster and Samarasinha's other Ceylon image as the first and second place winners in the Government Tourist Bureau's design competition. This second place image illustrates Mount Lavinia Beach. The third place prize went to G.S. Fernando's poster of a temple (see Lot 31).

One of two posters this artist is known to have designed promoting travel to the island off India's Southern coast. Ceylon, currently known as Sri Lanka, was a British colony until it achieved its independence in 1948. Given that this poster was printed in London suggests that it was designed while the colony was still under British rule. This is the larger format.
