A Quick Bite Between Memories and Dreams signed and dated 2011 (lower left) mixed media on canvas 50" x 72" (127 cm x 183 cm) * This lot is sold to benefit the Asian Cultural Council Good and evil, black or white, why are we always in the midst of opposites' contradictions? Why is there almost no existence which doesn't subsist through these contradictions? There are still ties that can hold together this fragile ethical universe. Don Salubayba visualizes the multi-layered aspects of Filipino society and history through animation and paintings, where he explores the dualities of Filipino culture and tradition in contrast to modern society. Salubayba's art is recognizable and idiosyncratic, anchored in allegory— muted colors masking disappearing figures, people in old photographs arranged in imaginary landscapes that connected the folkloric to the contemporary, linking the historical to the banalities of the present. Salubayba also reflects on "culture," and an aspect of this are the habits or customs that inevitably are made into instruments of identity. In Salubayba’s universe, “culture” mutates. They are not viewed as fully formed texts, but are seminal and germinal, the nucleus of a transforming, transformative discourse. His works are also characterized by child-like playfulness and curiosity, which explained his parallel life as a member of the Anino Shadowplay Collective, a family of interdisciplinary artists whose visionary works have negotiated with the world of light and shadows in performance spaces in Patras, Hanoi, Jakarta and Sydney.

Don Salubayba (1978 - 2014) - Who are the People in the Neighborhood

        Est: ₱100,000 - ₱130,000

Who are the People in the Neighborhood dated 2004 light box, lace, plaster resin 48" x 48" (122 cm x 122 cm) * This lot is sold to benefit the Asian Cultural Council For Filipino visual artist Don Salubayba, the past should not only be seen as a record of events, but an active aspect that shapes and defines both our present and our future. His works effectively reflect this artistic philosophy through the way his works present themselves as amalgamations of different and distinct styles and influences. By doing so, Salubayba effectively maps out the ways different things, concepts, and ideas exist in an interconnected tapestry of sorts. This particular piece titled Who Are the People in the Neighborhood explores the diversity that is inherent to human life. The work features a number of human faces, each one distinct from one another, and each one seemingly a wholly unique inner world. Despite this, when viewed as a whole, Salubayba presents us a structure that implies a narrative that, although wordless, is seemingly built upon history and community.

Don Salubayba (1978 - 2014) Big Bang Bamboo signed and dated 2010 (lower left) mixed media on canvas 80” x 72” (203 cm x 182 cm)    Alamat, Solo Exhibition, Tin-Aw Gallery, Makati City, September 24 to October 9, 2010.     WRITE UP: In his 2010 one-man show at Tin-Aw Art Gallery, Alamat, Don Salubayba reimagines episodes in Alamat ng Pilipinas and translates it into threedimensional pieces he called palitaws. This exhibit was set before he took off for Taipei for a two-month residency grant at the Taipei Artists Village. Big Bang Bamboo is one of the large-scale pieces featured in the said show in which the contemporary artist displayed his animator inclinations and paper engineering techniques. His animator skills  were also further developed through his involvement with the Anino Shadowplay Collective, as seen in this attempt in bringing to life a legend on the origin of the Philippines. The internationally renowned late visual artist believed that history is ever-present, not a thing of the past—his art shows his concern in the repetition of history, a practice in redundancy. He also incorporated aesthetic elements that marked the boom of the print industry and the advent of film in his works. A graduate of batch Avellana-Brocka from the Philippine High School for the Arts and a Fine Arts graduate of the University of the Philippines Diliman, Salubayba was the recipient of the Thirteen Artists Award from the Cultural Center of the Philippines in 2009. Prolific and multi-awarded, his artistic preoccupations include painting, shadowplay theater, and installation art.

        Est: ₱180,000 - ₱234,000

Don Salubayba (1978-2014) Theoria Sa Paglipad Gamit Ang Artipisyal, Na Pag-iisip mixed media on canvas Don Maralit Salubayba received his Bachelor’s degree in painting from the University of the Philippines in 2000. Since then, has been completely devoted to the arts, as a painter, puppeteer, and teacher. A passionate and prolific painter, his images often emerge from the notion of man as container, a repository of experience. In majority, of his paintings Salubayba isolates sections of the human body and juxtaposes these with an image of an object, setting up a tense symbolic relationship. The paintings are always in high contrast, and the play of light and dark may be partly influenced by the artist’s involvement in shadow puppetry — as he is an active member of the Anino Shadow Play collective, which merges the visual with literary and Performance arts. In 2004, Salubayba taught at the Philippines High School for the Arts in Laguna, at the Museo Pambata, and at the Ayala Museum in Manila. He applied to the ACC and received funding to support a three-month residency at Headlands Center for the Arts in Sausalito, followed by a three-month stay in New York to observe art activities, meet with artists and curators, and create new works in the United States.
