              A rare stoneware, blue glazed 'three deer and cornfield'-vase. Copenhagen, 1930. Production Kobenhavn Stentojsbraenderi. Stamp, signature and date underneath. Provenance: Private collection, Brussels Axel Salto is a multi-talented artist who became a master ceramist. Yet, his artistic career started as a painter when he graduated in 1911 from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. But his creativity also expressed itself in book illustrations, graphic designs, jewellery, textiles, works on paper and not least ceramics with which he made an artistic breakthrough in 1925 at the International Exposition in Paris. As an editor of the critical art journal 'Klingen' and as a member of the artists’ group ‘The 4’, Salto was a pivotal figure in early Danish Modernism. During the 1950s he was one of an exclusive group of furniture designers and craftsmen who promoted Danish design with great success under the banner of ‘Danish Modern’. Based on his observation of nature’s forms, structures and their inherent dynamisms, Salto designed the ‘fluting’, ‘budding’ and ‘sprouting’ styles which are characteristic of his ceramic work. Provenance: Collection privée Bruxelles Axel Salto est un artiste aux multiples talents qui est devenu le maître du grès. La carrière artistique de Salto a commencé par la peinture. Diplômé de l'Académie royale danoise des beaux-arts en 1911, il fait ses débuts. Maar zijn creativiteit uitte zich ook in boekillustraties, grafische ontwerpen, sieraden, textiel, werken op papier en voornamelijk keramiek waarmee hij in 1925 doorbrak in Parijs. Als redacteur van het kritische kunsttijdschrift 'Klingen' en als lid van de kunstenaarsgroep 'De 4' was Salto een spilfiguur in het vroege Deense modernisme. In de jaren 1950 maakte hij deel uit van een exclusieve groep meubelontwerpers en ambachtslieden die met veel succes het Deens design promootten onder de noemer 'Deens Modern'. Gebaseerd op zijn observatie van de vormen, structuren en inherente dynamiek van de natuur, ontwierp Salto de 'fluting', 'budding' en 'sprouting' stijlen die kenmerkend zijn voor zijn keramische werk. Vandaag de dag heeft Salto's keramiek een bijna cultstatus bereikt en wordt hij internationaal bewonderd om zijn originele vormen.
