technique: marble | 43 cm | signature: signed | condtion: restored Lot description Ladislav Saloun, an important Czech sculptor of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, is known primarily for his expressive and symbolist work. Characterized by delicate modeling and a calm, introspective atmosphere, this marble nude embodies his masterful work with the material and his ability to capture both the fragility and strength of the human figure. The sculpture is a typical example of Saloun's ability to combine naturalistic elements with a touch of idealism and symbolism, reflecting his deep artistic exploration of the human psyche and emotions. The work represents a timeless piece of modern Czech sculpture and is evidence of Saloun's contribution to the formation of Czech cultural identity.

        Est: -

1923 | technique: gypsum | 23 cm | signature: marked SALOUN Lot description This work, called "The Touch of Fate" and made of plaster, belongs to the important sculptural works of the Czech artist Ladislav Saloun, who is best known for his monumental work on the Jan Hus Memorial in Old Town Square in Prague. "Touch of Fate" embodies his fascination with human existence, destiny and man's struggle with the inevitable forces of life. Typical for Saloun is the sensitive processing of matter, which here resulted in a subtle, almost ethereal rendering of the female body in motion, with a reference to impressionism, which also influenced Czech sculptural work at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Plaster as a material gives the work lightness, which is complemented by a dramatic, even expressive approach to the form, which enhances the sense of fate and inevitable fate that the work conveys. The sculpture is not only an example of Saloun's technical mastery, but also an expression of the deep human and philosophical perception that dominated his work.

        Est: -

This is a model for the unrealised Liberation Monument designed in 1918, commissioned by the town of Nový Bydžov. According to the author's notes, the monument depicts the nation as "a young man riding confidently into the rain of sunshine and the winds and storms. It expresses the idea of the whole nation, it depicts the young liberated homeland ... it gives a sense of all the longings, hopes, expectations of the liberation of the resurrected nation." After the commission was withdrawn, the statue was cast in bronze in several pieces on a smaller scale by the famous Czech moulder Franta Anýž. The success of this model is evidenced by the fact that it was purchased by, for example, Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk and the Ministry of National Defence for their collections. In the context of the new sculptural tendencies, Šaloun only hints at decorativeness and accentuates a rather clear line. The stated height is without the plinth. Signed: signed on the plinth: L SALOUN

Ladislav Šaloun, sculptor and illustrator, pupil of T. Seidan and B. Schnirch, is one of the key figures of Czech Art Nouveau Symbolism in sculpture. He was one of the most prolific sculptors of the first half of the 20th century and often collaborated with architects on monumental works. His main and most important work was the monument to Mister Jan Hus on Old Town Square in Prague (1901, completed 1915). During its creation, Šaloun was influenced by the monumental work of Auguste Rodin. For Šaloun, a statue does not mean a mere stylistic transformation, but becomes a vehicle for the expression of thought. The offered smaller sculpture Girl with Drapery (Zuzanka), which was made by the famous foreign artist Franta Anýž, is a charming example of Šaloun's characteristic style, which combines the static nature of the sculpture with the atmosphere of the subject: bathing, changing clothes. On the base made of marble from Slivenec the dedication is engraved: 'To the President of the Old Town Sports Club of Bohemia 1941'. Dimensions are with plinth. Signed: unsigned, marked caster: FRANTA ANÝŽ

        LADISLAV SALOUN (1870-1946): A HARPY

        Est: -

1934 57 cm (h) Serpentinite, amber. This unique object, which Ladislav Saloun created in 1934, symbolizes the malevolent creature from antiquity and was part of his studio's original furnishings. As explained in the expert assessment by Prof. PhDr. Petr Wittlich, CSc: "... the date it was made is interesting, because the subject is an exception in Saloun's interwar work. It builds on his symbolic sculptures from the early part of the century, and due to its monumental form it was evaluated as the most remarkable work from Saloun's late period. Its meaning can only be speculated, but it can be understood as Salooun't response to poor assessments of his work, strongly worded by F. X. Salda in his legendary 1929 article 'The Plague of Monuments'. Originally the beautiful goddess of storms, half human and half bird, in Greek mythology the harpy transformed into a hideous avenger of man's guilt. Saloun, who at the beginning of the century created a remarkable series of expressive heads depicting extreme mental states, which were also used in the Hus memorial, returned to this concept in Harpy to give him a more general meaning seeped in mythology. Perhaps for him the Harpy was a symbol of the eternal retribution threatening artistic monumentalism that eliminates functionalist utilitarianism. The mesmerising expressiveness in Harpy's face is amplified by the material that was chosen for the sculpture, as the greenish tone injects it with a sense of natural fateful strength." Around 1915 34 cm (h) Cara marble. Marked on lower front: "S". In this enchanting small sculpture Saloun combines his mastery of expressing his state of mind, thus building on his earlier series of smaller sculptures from the beginning of the century, with the freedom to fully visualize erotic female beauty. This position as a central subject was opened to artists at the fin de siècle, when “the woman is placed on the metaphysical throne of the universe, and love, which gives movement to the sun and other stars, is lifted up to the mythical altar. Woman unseated other powers and values of life in art or removed them to the background, and thus these are understood and valued only through her and covered only in the glow she reflects onto them. The woman becomes the nearly sole inspiration of poetry and art ...” F. X. Salda, Boje o zitrek, Meditace a rapsodie, Prague, 1948, pp. 58–59). An identical work is in the holdings of the National Gallery in Prague, inventory no. P 8005. Starting price: 70 000 CZK (2 745 EUR)
