JEAN JULES BERNARD SALMSON (Paris, 1823-1902). "Hermes". Gilt bronze and marble base. Signed. Measurements: 50 x 23 x 21 cm. Jean Jules Salmson was the son of Jean-Baptiste Salmson (1807-1866), a Swedish engraver of medals and precious stones, who settled in Paris in 1823. He entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he was a pupil of Jules Ramey, Armand Toussaint and Auguste Dumont. In 1845 he won the sculpture essay competition on the theme of L'Effroi. He taught many sculptors, including Émile-Coriolan Guillemin, André Paul Arthur Massoulle, Jean-Louis Grégoire, Henri Lebossé, Vincent Desiré Faure de Broussé (1876-1908). He was later appointed director of the Geneva School of Industrial Arts in 1876.
