Ismadi Sallehudin is an artist from Raub, Pahang with over 20 years of experience in the arts industry. He graduated with a Fine Art degree from UiTM, Kuala Lumpur, in 1994. He also obtained his master’s degree in Art and Design from De Montfort University, UK, in 1999. The expression of colours is very important to Sallehudin. His works are accidental in that he uses different techniques like scratching on the canvas, splashing of colours, quick strokes of the brush strokes, spontaneous brush flow and combinations of other techniques. Sallehudin explores the process of paint, using the human form as a vehicle to create emotion. Life, death, change and time are predominant themes running through his works. Besides painting, Sallehudin is also adept in etching, drawing and monotype print. His works have been exhibited extensively at home and abroad.

ISMADI SALLEHUDDIN : Rendang, 2016

Mohamad Ismadi Sallehudin, known as Ismadi, studied at Institut Teknologi MARA and obtained his masters degree at De Monfort University, England. He is an artist with over 20 years experience under his belt, whose work typically revolves around the relationship between humans and animals. Entitled ‘Rendang’, this work of mixed media on canvas portrays bold brushstrokes, an interplay of dark, earthy colours and the glimpses of bright hues of yellow and orange towards the frame of the work. Multiple streaks of dark and light allow viewers to interpret the painting to their perception.

Ismadi Sallehudin is a veteran in the Malaysia art scene specifically in the realm of abstract art. Over the years, he has mastered using various styles from etching, drawing and monotyping to express the profoundness of the relationship between nature and life. His works have been exhibited extensively at home and abroad. His roles as an art educator included lecturing at UiTM (1994 to 1997) and Kolej Bandar Utama (1995 to 1997). His Fikir Diri Menjalara artwork features a spontaneous, gestural and scratch effect which stresses the seriousness of the subject matter. The dark blue tone offers a delightful contrast to the expressive sketches and pronounced lines.

ISMADI SALLEHUDIN (b. 1971) MANJALARA SERIES 118, 2002, Acrylic on canvas

‘Menjalara’ is a series that Ismadi Sallehudin is most associated with although he has moved on to others like Rimba, Catatan, and now, Barangan Larangan. Manjalara, an old Malay term which comes from ‘manja’ (love/doting) and ‘lara’ (symphony) is about a mother’s love, and the series was most prevalent during 1994-1998 despite the odd later recurrences. It is also reflected in Nature, especially since the Ulu Dong, Raub, abode that Ismadi is staying in is amidst vegetation, trees and a waterfall. The mother’s love is translated into a process of growing, relationships and tribulations through a play of colours and forms, using a multiplicity of techniques including splashing and scraping. “When I work, there is a meditation that brings a balance to my mind, a sense of peace and quiet focus,” said Ismadi, who is also a talented musician playing the saxophone and violin.Ismadi graduated from the Mara Institute of Technology (now UiTM) in 1994, and received his Master’s in Art and Design from the de Montfort University, Leicester, UK, in 1999. He had lectured at Universiti ITM (1994-97) and Kolej Bandar Utama (1995-97), He was the head of programme in Shahputra College, UiTM, in 2008, and deputy dean of the University College, Shahputra, Pahang, 2011 and dean of Faculty of Fine Art at the Akademi Seni Budaya dan Warisan Kebangsaan (Aswara). He left teaching to concentrate on art full time in 2012. He is represented by Artisan Fine Art (Kuala Lumpur) and Ong Art Gallery (Penang).

Thunder is a refined piece by painter and sculptor Ismadi Sallehudin. The artist uses an emotive palette of black, white and a subtle hint of grey-green, viridian, purple and orange with bold gestural brush marks composed of organic and concentric forms in the centre, producing a forceful rhythmic movement which draws the viewers gaze into the canvas.   Ismadi Sallehudin explores the relationship of nature and life in his works. A fine art graduate of Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) in 1994, he attained his Masters Degree in Art and Design from De Montfort University, Leicester, United Kingdom in 1999. Besides painting, Ismadi is also adept in etching, drawing and monotype print. His works have been exhibited extensively at home and abroad. His roles as an art educator included lecturing at UiTM (1994 - 1997) and Kolej Bandar Utama (1995 - 1997). His works are in found in local and international private and public collections.

This painting is composed of dark gestural organic shapes combined to form a unified whole amidst rectangular fields of colour.
