MATTHIJS THEODORUS MAURITIUS VAN SALK (Dutch, 1864-1938), after DAVID ADOLPH CONSTANT ARTZ (Dutch, 1837-1890) The Sewing Circle, 1903 Oil on panel 31 x 42 inches (78.7 x 106.7 cm) PROVENANCE: Commissioned by the grandparents of the present owner in 1903; By descent to the present owner. NOTE: This lot is accompanied by handwritten letters between the artist and the original owners. On a trip to The Netherlands in 1903, the grandparents of the present owner visited the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam where they met painter and professional copyist, Matthijs van Salk, who had his easel set up before a painting in the museum and was making a faithful copy of it in oil. They commissioned him to paint three paintings for them of works they had deeply admired in the museum. This work, which they called "The Sewing Circle," is a careful copy of David Artz's luminous composition of 1870-90 entitled "In the Orphanage at Katwijk." The details of the commission are recorded in the correspondence between the couple and painter which accompany this lot.
