Porfirio Salinas Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1910 - d. 1973

Artist Porfirio Salinas created impressionistic landscapes of beautiful Texas Hill Country, developing his style over years of association with fellow Texas artists and nature-walks through Texas landscapes. Salinas was exposed to art through his employment at a local art supply store, where a chance encounter with Robert William Wood led to a position as the elder artist's studio assistant. Salinas studied the work of Woods and others in the local community, at times joining Woods and Jose Arpa on inspirational nature-walks through Texas hills and scrubland.

Under the promotion of a local art dealer, Porfirio Salinas' paintings began to sell to wealthy Texan patrons and politicians. His clientele grew to include Lyndon Johnson, then Representative of Texas. Johnson often referred to the painter as his favorite artist; throughout Johnson's term, Salinas' work adorned the foyers of the White House. This public endorsement led to great popularity and acclaim. Capture the raw beauty of Mother Nature or the exotic beauty of a far-flung place with antique or contemporary landscape paintings from Invaluable.

Johnson’s administration of the 1960s, Porfirio Salinas remained one of the Lone Star State’s most popular artists. Today, his works remain sought-after with Texas collectors and those who love Hill Country landscapes. One of the first Mexican American painters to become widely recognized for his art, Salinas was a favorite of President Lyndon B. Johnson and his wife, Lady Bird Johnson, as well as of Sam Rayburn, the longest-serving Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Texas Governor John Connelly. "The pride I always feel in telling friends around the world about our great Texas artists was excelled only by my delight in receiving from you another wonderful masterpiece," Johnson once wrote to Salinas, according to the painter's obituaries in the San Antonio Evening News and the San Antonio Express.

Porfirio Salinas (1910 - 1973) Autumn Landscape Oil on Board. From the years of the Great Depression through President Lyndon Johnson's Great Society of the 1960s, Texan Porfirio Salinas remained one of the Lone Star State's most popular artists. Today, his works remain popular with Texas collectors and those who love landscapes of the beautiful "Hill Country" that lies in the center of the state. One of the first Mexican-American painters to become widely recognized for his art, Salinas was a favorite of President Lyndon Johnson and his wife, Lady Bird Johnson, as well as of Sam Rayburn, the longest-serving Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Texas Governor John Connelly. In fact, President Johnson was so enamored with his Salinas paintings that the artist will forever be associated with America's first Texas-born President. Works by Porfirio Salinas are in a number of museum collections, grace the halls of the Texas State Capitol and the Governor's Mansion in Austin, and are included in virtually every major private collection of Early Texas Art. Like most landscape artists of the era, Salinas was an avid Plein-air painter, and he took his easel and paint box with him on trips throughout Texas and into Mexico. He painted scenes of wildflowers, including the various varieties of Blue Lupin, the state flower, as well as other flowering flora. These show the influence of his artistic mentors Robert W. Wood and Jose Arpa Y Perea. Salinas also painted a number of scenes of Prickly Pear Cactus that show the influence of the English painter Dawson Dawson-Watson (1864-1939), who painted many such works during his tenure in Texas. Frame size: 24 1/2 in. x 36 1/2 in. Porfirio Salinas was a Mexican-American painter known for his impressionistic landscapes. Some of his most admired works depict blooms of wildflowers in the Texas scrubland. Born on November 6, 1910 in Bastrop, TX to Mexican immigrant farmers, he was first exposed to art after leaving school to work at a local art supply store. After meeting the painter Robert William Wood at the store, Salinas worked as Wood's studio assistant. Notably, Salinas was one of President Lyndon B. Johnson's favorite artists, and his work adorned the White House foyer through his term. He was the subject of a 1962 solo exhibition at the Witte Museum in San Antonio. Today Salinas' work can be found in a number of public collections, including the Panhandle Plains Historical Museum in Canyon, Texas; the Texas State Capitol; the Texas Governor's Mansion; the Lyndon Baines Johnson Ranch; the Witte Museum in San Antonio; Texas A & M University and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, among others. Note: "The subject matter of this impressive painting is of Texas in autumn. The dry, dusty, dirt road and the distant ranch house including the vintage windmill are reminiscent of the land under the big cloudy skies of Texas. The tree's foliage have turned to soft golds and rusts, presenting a warmth of color. The artist's composition effectively causes the eye to follow the road to the mountain ridges, further to the distant horizons, while the sense enjoy the crisp blends of the fall colors.," appearing in an appraisal by Rosenberg, Johnson & Associates - Art, Estate & Personal Property Appraisers and Brokers, Carlsbad, New Mexico, 1999; and again in 2007, both by Linda Rosenberg, Albuquerque, New Mexico, Appraiser.  Provenance: Klossner Estate, Phoenix, Arizona
