    Est: €800 - €1,000

EMILIO GRAU SALA (Barcelona, 1911 - 1977). "Young man on the train". Watercolor on paper. Presents informative label on the back of Barrachina & Ramoneda (Barcelona). Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 22 x 14 cm; 50 x 42 cm (frame). Son of the draftsman Juan Grau Miró, Grau Sala combines his attendance to the School of Fine Arts of Barcelona with an essentially self-taught formation. In 1930 he held his first exhibition at the Badriñas gallery in Barcelona. At the beginning of the Civil War, in 1936, he moved to Paris, where he settled in the Spanish artists' colony of Montparnasse. That same year he was awarded the first Carnegie Prize. In the twenty-five years he stayed there, he was closely acquainted with the avant-garde, although he always opted for a colorist figuration, derived from impressionism and fauvism. It was a path already taken by the commercial circuit, surpassed in terms of novelty by cubism and surrealism, but which was kept alive at a high level thanks to masters such as Bonnard, Chagall and Dufy. In fact, he soon became known in Paris as the successor of the Impressionist spirit and values, directly related to Bonnard and Vuillard. This stylistic choice of Grau Sala conditioned that of his wife, Ángeles Santos, who abandoned her singular surrealism for a more conventional landscape, a decision that critics did not hesitate to regret. The success of his style led Grau Sala to devote himself also to graphic work (engravings, lithographs, illustrations for novels, posters...), as well as theatrical sets. The grace and finesse of his characters, the liveliness of the colors and the elegant atmosphere of the environments that he captured made him reap great success and recognition all over the world. He held several solo exhibitions, mainly in Barcelona and Paris, but also in cities such as New York, Toulouse, London and Los Angeles. In 1963 he returned to Barcelona, when the stagnant figuration of Franco's Spain began to be challenged by Oteiza, Chillida, Tàpies and the collective "El Paso". However, he remained faithful to his style, and until his death in 1975 he worked within his own personal line, centered on his favorite themes, female figures, interiors and landscapes, in a vaguely classical, nostalgic time setting of the nineteenth century. After his death, and for more than a decade, Grau Sala was overshadowed by the multiple novelties that were emerging in democratic Spain, but from the 1990s onwards, the new boom in mid-level collecting relaunched Grau Sala, as he was understood as an interpreter of Impressionism in a Spanish key. Works by Emilio Grau Sala are kept in the National Museum of Art of Catalonia, the Esteban Vicente Museum of Contemporary Art and the Óscar Domínguez Institute of Contemporary Art and Culture. Informative label on the back of Barrachina & Ramoneda (Barcelona).

EMILIO GRAU SALA (Barcelona, 1911 - Paris, 1975). "Interior with mother and son". Oil on panel. Attached certificate issued by Julian Grau Santos, son of the artist. It has an informative label of the Barbié Gallery (Barcelona) on the back. Signed in the lower left corner. Measurements. 54 x 46 cm; 77,5 x 69 cm (frame). In this work Grau Sala displays all his plastic mastery. The author recreates a splendid interior by the chromatic and formal symphony. He apparently grants the protagonism to a mother and her son located next to the table, although they are surrounded by a great profusion of material elements, the curtains, the flowers in the vase, a painting, games for the child....etc, there is no corner left to conquer in this room brimming with life. The fine line drawing that endows the figures with great elegance is combined with a palette in which the colors seem to struggle to free themselves from the objects that contain them, given their Fauvist intensity and variety of patterns. This is a painting that took decorativism to the highest artistic level. With a strategic use of color where different shades coexist as an expressive counterpoint to define the joyful luminosity that surrounds him. Grau Sala studied at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, an apprenticeship that he combined with an essentially self-taught training. In 1930 he held his first exhibition at the Badriñas gallery in Barcelona. When the Civil War broke out, he moved to Paris, and that same year, 1936, he won the first Carnegie Prize. EMILIO GRAU SALA (Barcelona, 1911 - Paris, 1975). Untitled, 1953. Watercolor on cardboard. Attached New Year's greeting of 1953, where the work is reproduced. Signed, dated and located (Paris) in the lower right corner. Measurements: 31 x 39 cm; 44 x 51,5 cm (frame). This painting was used as the main motif for the New Year's greeting of the Perellada Restaurant. Starring an elegant woman, Grau Sala unfolds before her a profuse still life that stands out for its sumptuousness and abundance, arranged on an infinite table that expands towards the spectator, turning him into one more diner and being invited by the artist to be part of the work in an active way. Behind the young woman, the background is defined by a black tonality that is interrupted by the presence of a large Christmas tree in the center of the scene. Son of the draftsman Juan Grau Miró, Grau Sala combined his attendance at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona with an essentially self-taught training. In 1930 he held his first exhibition at the Badriñas gallery in Barcelona. EMILIO GRAU SALA (Barcelona, 1911 - Paris, 1975). "Young man, birds and cage on a terrace open to the sea in Toulon", 1939. Oil on wood. Signed and dated in the lower margin.

    Est: €10,000 - €12,000

EMILIO GRAU SALA (Barcelona, 1911 - Paris, 1975). "Young man, birds and cage on a terrace open to the sea in Toulon", 1939. Oil on wood. Signed and dated in the lower margin. Measurements: 46 x 55 cm; 60 x 70 (frame). Grau Sala, representative of the most vitalist side of the School of Paris, displays in this vibrant scene a real feast for the senses. The feminine universe always fascinated the artist, and that fascination is captured in scenarios that, despite their familiarity, are located halfway between reality and reverie. On this occasion, a beach view from the terrace of an apartment is transformed (using a post-fauve palette) into a display of textures and chromatic patterns that, without losing the figurative reference, transcend it. Because Grau Sala does not limit himself to enclosing the forms within their limits, but the brushstroke overflows in a festive, yet balanced, decorativism. A young woman whose white linen dress is fluttered by the breeze, swirling her skirt as if it were a seashell, holds a small bird in her hands and observes it with melancholy. Next to her, a bamboo cage houses on different floors a number of tropical birds. The socks and slippers hanging from the clothesline also flutter in the wind, which in turn swells the sails of the boats we can see in the distance. The blue of the sea, of the sky, of the young woman's eyes, of the sailors' suits glimpsed between the palm trees, of the shoes hanging and of the ribbon pinned on the girl's chest, competes and dialogues with the whites of the sailboats, of the dress, of the clean clouds, of the white roses, of the table with a wrought iron base? The whole is resolved in an intense luminism that creates a pleasant atmosphere that lulls the viewer and stimulates his imagination. Grau Sala was an outstanding representative of the School of Paris. He combined his attendance at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona with self-taught training. He formed the group "Independents". He held his first exhibition in 1929 in the galleries of the famous art dealer Joseph Dalmau and a second, already individual, in the Brandinas Gallery in 1930. He made numerous illustrations of books (Fleurs du mal, Madame Bovary, Bel-Ami, etc.), engravings and scenographies. In 1936, the year he moved to Paris, he received the Carnegie Prize. He begins to paint in an expressionist stage that derives in his own style that will give him self-confidence and growing fame. He returns to the Belle Epoque as inspiration, achieving great ingenuity and artistic elegance. Grau Sala painted in an intimate tone. He has exhibited in innumerable places: Madrid (Museum of Modern Art), London (Fine Arts Gallery), Buenos Aires (Muller Gallery), New York (Dindley Gallery), Barcelona (Syra, Rovira, Sala Parés) etc. His works can be found in the Museums of the Villa de Paris, Museum of l'Ille de France, Chateau de Sceaux, Museum of Honfleur, Museum of La Roxhelle, Museum of Barcelona, Museum of Tossa de Mar, Museum of Philadelphia, Museum of Buenos Aires, etc. His work was recovered posthumously, being realized numerous anthologies in Barcelona and Madrid.

EMILIO GRAU SALA (Barcelona, 1911 - Paris, 1975). "Walk in the park", 1961. Watercolor and ink on paper. Signed in the lower margin, signed and dated on the back. Measurements: 50 x 73 cm; 71 x 93,5 cm (frame). Grau Sala was always an avid observer of types and customs, especially of moments of leisure of the wealthy classes. Here he gives us a stylized vision, resolved with his characteristic decorative and colorful style, of a Sunday scene with refined strollers and equestrian figures. The green and ochre background suggests a country setting. His quick brushstrokes, made up of multicolored patches, transmit a momentary impression of the joy of living day by day, while through an aesthetic prism that avoids realism, he endows the daily scene with a magical quality. Son of the draftsman Juan Grau Miró, Grau Sala combines his attendance at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona with an essentially self-taught training. In 1930 he held his first exhibition at the Badriñas gallery in Barcelona. EMILIO GRAU SALA (Barcelona, 1911 - Paris, 1975). "Dancers". Ink on paper. Signed in the lower left area. Measurements: 42 x 30 cm; 63 x 52 cm (frame). Grau Sala was formed in the School of Fine Arts of Barcelona, learning that he combined with an essentially self-taught formation. In 1930 he held his first exhibition at the Badriñas gallery in Barcelona. When the Civil War broke out, he moved to Paris, and that same year, 1936, he won the first Carnegie Prize. In the twenty-five years that he remained in the French capital, he was closely acquainted with the avant-garde, although he always opted for a colorist figuration, derived from impressionism and fauvism. In fact, he soon became known in Paris as a successor of the Impressionist spirit and values, directly related to Bonnard and Vuillard. The success of his style led Grau Sala to devote himself also to graphic work and scenography. The grace and finesse of his characters, the vivacity of the colors and the elegant atmosphere of the environments that he captured made him reap great success and recognition all over the world.
