    • Original Benedictine Vintage Liqueur Poster by Makato Saito c1990
      Jun. 21, 2022

Original Benedictine Vintage Liqueur Poster by Makato Saito c1990

      Est: $250 - $500

This original vintage poster was created in the 1990's by artist, Makato Saito. It is part of a campaign to promote the 200 year old Benedictine as a modern beverage. Makoto Saito (1952- Present) is a Japanese graphic designer and poster artist. Saito began his artistic career as a printmaker and came to later describe himself as a "poster designer". Many of his posters can be characterized as text-free, emphasizing imagery as the driving force in advertisement. Saito's work has been exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Benedictine is a herbal liqueur that was developed by Alexandre Le Grand in 19th century France. The liqueur is flavored with over 27 flowers, roots, herbs and spices. According to various sources, the recipe of the liqueur was cultivated by a 16th century monk named Dom Bernardo Vincelli who was said to have dabbled in Alchemy. The recipe for Benedictine was purportedly created to revive tired monks, and is for the most part a secret to the general public. In 1860, Le Grand found the manuscripts for the beverage and created Benedictine. The liqueur began importation to the United States in 1888 where it still remains a popular brand. In 1992, Benedictine was bought by Bacardi for 1.4 million. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is on heavyweight paper and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all our posters.
