Maurice Bloch; [Christies New York, June 19, 1990 lot 28]; Hirschl & Adler Gallery, New York Jules Émile Saintin was born in Lemée, France on October 1, 1829 and attended classes at the Ecole des Beaux-arts under Michel-Martin Drolling, Achille-Jean Babtiste, and Francais Edouard Picot. Saintin made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1848 and his work was awarded medals in 1866, 1870, and 1886. Saintin worked in New York City around 1857 and he was commissioned to paint portraits of prominent citizens, including a portrait of Stephen A. Douglas, which now hangs in the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. He was elected an Associate of the National Academy of Design in 1861. Saintin returned to France sometime around 1863 and he died in Paris in 1894. He was awarded the prestigious Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur. His work is housed in the Corcoran Gallery of Art and in France in the Musée de Nice, Musée de Saint-Brieuc. 3 items
