    SAINT-SAENS CAMILLE: (1835-1921) French Composer. A.L.S., `C.Saint-Saëns´, one page, small 4to, mourning paper, Paris, 26th October 1878, to Mr. Eschenauer, in French. Sant-Saens thanks his correspondent for the volume of poetry he sent him, and states in part `Je vous suis très reconnaissant de m´avoir adressé votre beau volume de poésies; je m´efforcerai de vous satisfaire... quand j´aurai fini les grands ouvrages qui m´occupent en ce moment.´ (Translation: "I am very grateful to you for sending me your beautiful volume of poetry; I will endeavour to satisfy you... when I have finished the great works which occupy me at the moment.") To the inside of the bifolium, and lightly affixed to the third blank page is the front mourning envelope addressed to Monsieur Eschenauer, sent to Boulevard St. Germain in Paris, postmarked and stamped. With blank integral leaf. Few very small tears to the edges, not affecting the text or signature. G

    SAINT-SAENS CAMILLE: (1835-1921) French Composer. A good A.N.S., `C.Saint-Saëns´, one page, small 4to, London, 21st July 1906, in French. The short message is apparently addressed to Sarah Bernhardt, stating `à la grande amie, à la (grande?).... artiste, cordiales félicitations´ (Translation: "to the great friend, to the (great?)... artist, kind congratulations"). Saint Saens travelled to many European locations during the 1906 summer to attend different performances of his own works, including London in June-July 1906. During that summer Camille Saint-Saens and Sarah Bernhardt concurred in London. With blank integral leaf. G to VG Sarah Bernhardt (1844-1923) French stage actress. She played female as well as male roles, including Shakespeare's Hamlet. Edmond Rostand called her "the queen of the pose and the princess of the gesture". She made several theatrical tours around the world, and she was one of the early prominent actresses to make sound recordings and to act in motion pictures.

Saint-Saëns” on the verso. 1 small 8vo and 1 one-half 4to page on one folding 4to light gray leaf. Total size of leaf approximately 6 ¼ x 8 ¾”. 1 horizontal and one vertical crease, some creasing at upper center, faint occasional thumbsoiling. Fine. Saint-Saëns was one of the most important French Romantic composers, with his most famous works being Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso, the opera Samson and Delilah, Danse Macabre, and Carnival of the Animals (this last piece was featured in the Walt Disney Studios film, Fantasia 2000).     Saint-Saëns, Camille, franz. Komponist (1835-1921). Porträt des Künstlers in einer Orig.-Bleistiftzeichnung von Friedrich Pfeiler, von diesem signiert "F. Pf. 1910". Auf leichtem Zeichenkarton. Darunter mit Tinte ein Musikzitat (8 Takte) des Komponisten, signiert "C. Saint-Saëns, 1910". Auf leichtem Zeichenkarton. 21 x 16,1 cm. O. O. 1910. -- Gutes Porträt in feiner Bleistift-Zeichnung. Friedrich Pfeiler war eigentich Opernsänger (Bariton), um 1905-1915 u. a. tätig an den Theatern von Dortmund, Köln, Düsseldorf, Altona. Er war Autographensammler, und in diesem Zusammenhang hat er es wohl gerade bei Musikern oftmals so gehandhabt, dass er Bildnisse von ihnen durchaus gekonnt zeichnete, meist wohl nach Vorlagen. Diese sandte er dann den Dargestellten mit der Bitte um eine Unterschrift samt Notenzitat. So wird dies auch in dem vorliegenden Fall gewesen sein. Das großzügige Musikzitat mit schwungvoller Unterschrift läßt darauf schließen, dass der Komponist mit seinem Bildnis zufrieden war. - Gleichmäßig etwas gebräunt; rückseitig Montagespuren von einer ehemaligen Aufhängung als Wandbild.

    SAINT-SAENS CAMILLE: (1835-1921) French Composer. An excellent A.L.S., `C.Saint-Saëns´, two pages, 4to, Faubourg St. Honoré 61, Paris, 6th June 1902, to an unidentified correspondent, in French. Saint-Saens refers to his friend Tchaikovsky, stating in part `Il m´aurait été très agréable d´assister à la Tchaikowsky-Feier, ayant été l´ami personnel du grand compositeur Russe, mais je dois aller à Londres à la fin de Juin et il me sera impossible d´aller en Allemagne à la même époque´ (Translation: `It would have been very pleasant for me to attend the Tchaikowsky-Feier, having been the personal friend of the great Russian composer, but I have to go to London at the end of June and it will be impossible for me to go to Germany at the same time´) Saint-Saens further responds to his correspondent referring to the possibility of a festival in the same way and in his honour, saying `Quant à l´idée d´une ''Saint-Saens Feier'' pour l´année prochaine je n´ai pas besoin de vous dire qu´elle me plait infiniment. Plusieures de mes oeuvres sont traduites en Allemend, le Déluge, Henry VIII, entre autres, pour plus de renseignements je vous engage à vous adresser à mes éditeurs Durand & Fils (Place de la Madeleine, 4 Paris)´ (Translation: `As for the idea of a ''Saint-Saens Feier'' for next year, I don´t need to tell you that I really like it very much. The composer makes an enquiry of his correspondent, in full, 'Les Amoureux de Catherine commencent-ils, ou finissent-ils la matinee? Je voudrais aller les entendre demain, sans etre oblige de subir Mme. Butterfly. Rep.S.V.P.' (Translation: 'Does Les Amoureux de Catherine begin or end in the morning? I would like to go and hear it tomorrow, without having to suffer Mme. Butterfly. R.S.V.P.'). In a postscript Saint-Saens remarks that he returned on Sunday evening from the countryside, where he had been for a fortnight. Some light creasing, a few minor spots of foxing and a few neat tears to the edges, G Les Amoureux de Catherine, an opera comique in one act, was the first opera composed by Henri Marechal (1842-1924) and Madama Butterfly is, of course, Giacomo Puccini's opera which had premiered in 1904.

Linker Rand unregelmäßig beschnitten. Poetischer Brief, wohl an den Dirigenten Joseph Dupont in Brüssel, über seinen Rückzugsort Las Palmas, wo er zu neuen Werken inspiriert werde. “… Vaguement, en ce mois, je sais qu’on te festoye: Du fond de l’Archipel où je vis comme une oye. … on est tranquille, on peut travailler, se promener, flaner en toute liberté, dans des appartements de 8 mètres de hauteur, les fenêtres toujours ouvertes, sans songer au chaud ni au froid. La bonne existence! On contemple la mer aux bleus horizons, on grimpe sur les montagnes, où d’innombrables euphorbes, aux formes bizarres, distillent inutilement leurs sucs pernicieux … Et maintenant, pourquoi je te dis toutes ces folies? Parce que dans ce pays, me couchant à 8 heures, je me relève toujours au milieu de la nuit pour lire ou écrire. Le dieu des songes plane sur moi en attendant qu’il reprenne tout à fait son empire, et je sens que je ne lui résisterai pas longtemps …”

    Camille Saint-Saens (1835-1922) pen signed cabinet card photograph portrait, inscribed "A un bien cher ami Rene Thorel. C. Saint-Saens en souvenir de la "Gloire" Mai 1911". Saint Saens was an internationally renowned composer, organist and pianist of the late 19th and early 20th century, known for important works such as Samson and Delilah and The Carnival of the Animals. Rene Thorel (1877-1916) was a photographer during World War I. Lenthy notes and partial handbill pasted on back of frame 11.75" x 7.5" as framed.
