LOUIS SAINT-GAUDENS American (1854-1913) "Piping Pan" bronze with brown patina, signed with initials, dated MDCCCLXXX and inscribed "cast by Griffoul, Newark, NJ". 20"H Provenance: Private collection Annette Saint-Gaudens, the artist's wife; Stanford White Family collection; A New York estate. Other Notes: Although modeled in 1880 no bronzes were cast during the sculptor's life. The plaster model was exhibited many times including an 1892 retrospective exhibition of the Society of American Artists and the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo (silver medal). After St. Gaudens' death in 1913 his widow, Annette St. Gaudens, authorized the casting of three life size bronzes (approx. 43"H) and four 20"H reductions. This cast is one of the four 20"H reductions.
