    Oil on fiberboard France, c. 1940 Henry Saint-Clair (1899-1990) – French artist Monogrammed lower right ‘HS’C’ Fiberboard: 33.1 x 41 cm Very good condition Focus of Henry Saint-Clair`s oeuvre are oil paintings of beach scenes from his home country Henry Saint-Clair was a post-impressionist who is known as one of the painters of the French life at the coast of the Normandy. He captured the scene at the beach of families in strong shades, set at the coast of the Normandy in places such as Deuville, Honfleur and Trouville. The artist’s preferred medium was oil on cardboard, which defines his unique manner of painting. In the current work, he depicts a group of women with a child lying on a beach under parasols. The painting is executed in broad, visible brushstrokes and in pastel colors. The painting is monogrammed lower right ‘HS’C’. The condition is very good. The dimensions of the fiberboard are 33.1 x 41 cm. The frame measures 51 x 59 cm. Henry Saint-Clair (1899-1990) A native of the Normandy, the artist Henry Saint-Clair later moved to Sotteville close to the pretty harbor of Honfleur. At the beginning of his artistic career he was an art restorer for the French National Museum, including the Louvre. He painted mostly in oil on painting cardboard and his main subject matters were scenes at the beach and the harbor of his home country. The primary body of his work was created between 1920 and 1970. This highly productive period was interrupted by the German occupation from 1941 until 1945. The colors and the cheerfulness of the paintings of Raoul Dufy were of great inspiration to him. Furthermore, Saint-Clair was interested in the painting style of Eugène Boudin and studied his work thoroughly. In Honfleur, he worked with the artists André Hambourg, Fernand Herbo and Jacques Bouyssou jointly in a studio for some time. He captured the scene at the beach of families in strong shades, set at the coast of the Normandy in places such as Deuville, Honfleur and Trouville. The artist's preferred medium was oil on cardboard, which defines his unique manner of painting. In the current work, he depicts a group of women with a child lying on a beach under parasols. The painting is executed in broad, visible brushstrokes and in pastel colors. The painting is monogrammed lower right 'HS'C'. The condition is very good. The dimensions of the fiberboard are 33.1 x 41 cm. The frame measures 51 x 59 cm. Henry Saint-Clair (1899-1990) A native of the Normandy, the artist Henry Saint-Clair later moved to Sotteville close to the pretty harbor of Honfleur. At the beginning of his artistic career he was an art restorer for the French National Museum, including the Louvre. He painted mostly in oil on painting cardboard and his main subject matters were scenes at the beach and the harbor of his home country. The primary body of his work was created between 1920 and 1970. This highly productive period was interrupted by the German occupation from 1941 until 1945. The colors and the cheerfulness of the paintings of Raoul Dufy were of great inspiration to him. Furthermore, Saint-Clair was interested in the painting style of Eugène Boudin and studied his work thoroughly. In Honfleur, he worked with the artists André Hambourg, Fernand Herbo and Jacques Bouyssou jointly in a studio for some time.
