PERU 1945. 18" X 14 3/4" MATTING 26 1/2" X 24" Sahlin once trekked to Latin America to paint the natives and found himself in the middle of a revolution, which he also painted. Sahlin, who spoke five languages fluently, migrated to this country at 19, became a commercial artist and then retired young after operating Stone Wright and Vogue Write Studios in New York and Chicago. It was then that his serious travel and art work began A collection of his paintings belong to the Smithsonian Institution of Art in Washington, D.C. His artistic specialty was pinpointing - in watercolors and oils - the costumes and customs of the world's peoples. Enthralled with the Indians of the Western Hemisphere, he crossed the Andes dozens of times.
