WILLIAM SADLER II (1782-1839) Poolbeg Lighthouse Oil on canvas, 34.5 x 47cm Known particularly for his competent, atmospheric and topographically interesting views of the countryside around Dublin, Sadler remains an enigma in the history of 19th century Irish art. This is partially because his father, William (fl.1768-1788) and his own son, also William (b.1808) painted somewhat similar scenes in a vaguely similar style and can be confused. William Sadler II, however, stands out as being a better painter than either his father or his son. He is also credited as having taught painting and counted James Arthur O’Connor as one of his pupils. He is recorded as exhibiting, between 1808 and 1821, many paintings on his trademark mahogany panels. The Royal Hibernian Academy records four paintings by Sadler exhibited at the 1828, 1833 and 1836 annual exhibitions, giving his address as Buckingham Street and later at Merrion Avenue. In his 1913 Dictionary of Irish Artists, Walter Strickland notes however that he finally settled in Manders Building in Ranelagh where he died in December 1839. Sadler was greatly influenced by and painted many copies of the Old Masters, particularly Dutch painters and this influence is seen in his landscape compositions with small figural groups. He also incorporated their technique of painting bright highlights to accentuate the almost three dimensional effect of his figures.

William Sadler II (c.1782-1839) PRISONER UNDER MOUNTED MILITARY GUARD oil on panel h:11  w:16 in. This work is thought to show a prisoner under escort, possibly one of Michael Dwyer's family or fellow rebels. Michael Dwyer (1772–1825) was a captain in the Irish Rebellion of 1798, leading the United Irishmen in battles in Wexford and Wicklow. Following the defeat and dispersal of the rebels, in July 1798 Dwyer withdrew into the Wicklow Mountains, and to his native Glen of Imaal, where he sustained a guerrilla campaign against British Crown forces. The failure in July 1803 of the rising in Dublin planned by Anne Devlin, his cousin, and by Robert Emmet, which he had hoped to join, and the internment of virtually all his extended family, forced "the Wicklow chief" to accept terms. With his closest lieutenants he was transported to New South Wales, Australia as an un-sentenced exile and free man in 1806.

Sadler was greatly influenced by and did many copies of the Old Masters, particularly Dutch painters and this influence is seen in his landscape compositions with small figural groups. He also incorporated their technique of painting bright highlights to accentuate the almost three dimensional effect of his figures. The present work is a wonderful atmospheric panorama of the Lower Lake at Killarney, one of the great beauty spots of Ireland. While the topography is somewhat fanciful, Ross Castle is readily identifiable beyond the party of pleasure seekers and tourists on the near shore. While views such as this are not uncommon in the artists oeuvre it is the scale and grandness of the view that sets the present apart from many others. Ross Castle was built in the late 15th century by local ruling clan the O’Donoghues Mór (Ross), though ownership changed hands during the Second Desmond Rebellion of the 1580s to the MacCarthy Mór. He then leased the castle and the lands to Sir Valentine Browne, ancestor of the Earls of Kenmare. The castle was amongst the last to surrender to Oliver Cromwell’s Roundheads during the Irish Confederate Wars, and was only taken when artillery was brought by boat via the River Laune. Lord Muskerry (MacCarthy) held the castle against Edmund Ludlow who marched to Ross with 4,000 foot soldiers and 200 horses, however, it was by water that he attacked the stronghold. At the end of the wars, the Brownes were able to show that their heir was too young to At the end of the wars, the Brownes were able to show that their heir was too young tohave taken part in the rebellion and they retained the lands. By about 1688, they had erected a mansion house near the castle, but their adherence to James II of England caused them to be exiled. The castle became a military barracks, which remained so until early in the 19th century. The Brownes did not return to live at Ross but built Kenmare House near Killarney.

William Sadler II (c.1782 – 1839) Eruption of Mount Vesuvius c. 1825, oils on panel, 53cms x 38cms (21” x 15”). (1) Please note below additional reference from Vendor, Son of a mezzotint artist of the same name, the landscape and genre painter William Sadler II was born in Dublin around 1782. According to Walter Strickland, in his Dictionary of Irish Artists, Sadler worked mainly in Dublin, producing views of that city and its environs: a favourite view was of the South Wall, with sailing ships heeling in the wind. Strickland records ‘He was also fond of painting conflagrations, and did many copies of the Old Masters’ confirming that Sadler’s paintings were mainly on mahogany panels, as is the case with the present work, a dramatic view of Mount Vesuvius near Naples, as seen at night during a volcanic eruption. Sadler was one of many artists who painted such views. Years before, in the late 1770s, Joseph Wright of Derby had produced a series of thirty works depicting different aspects of the same subject—one of these said to have been commissioned by an Irish bishop. The Bishop of Derry, the Earl of Bristol, was certainly the commissioner of a series of paintings, including one of Vesuvius, by Jacob More (1740-1793), who witnessed an eruption in 1779. In 1817, JMW Turner painted a dramatic scene of Vesuvius erupting, although this was two years before he actually visited Naples. Sadler produced several versions of Eruption of Vesuvius, of which the present work is the most distinguished. It is an imaginative work, one that links the volcanic activity of Vesuvius in the late eighteenth century to the time, in AD79, when a massive eruption engulfed the towns of Herculaneum and Pompeii in lava and ash. Sadler has included a range of classical Roman buildings in his depiction of the scene, as well as a ‘pharos’ or lighthouse, along with a variety of sailing craft and rowing boats. But in Sadler’s painting, the boats seem to be packed with sight-seers rather than people fleeing a disaster. On the right, a group of elegantly-dressed people stand on the quay wall, looking at the eruption. Sadler produced several versions of this painting. A similar work entitled A Capriccio Nightscape of the Bay of Naples with the Vesuvius Erupting was in the Slane Castle sale in October 2013. It is not known if Sadler actually travelled to Naples, or worked from secondary sources, in producing these views of Vesuvius. He also painted several panoramic views of the Battle of Waterloo, and so may have been travelling on the Continent in the years after 1815. His Battle of Waterloo is perhaps his masterpiece, while Donnybrook Fair, a late work, was in the collection of the late Brian Burns. Strickland records Sadler exhibiting in Dublin between the years 1809 and 1814, and again in 1819 and 1821. The gap of several years may have been due to his being in France and Italy. He showed at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1828 and 1833. He was also a teacher, and among his pupils was the young James Arthur O’Connor. In 1838, a large auction of Sadler’s paintings was held, the works sold included Eruption of Mount Vesuvius, Burning of the Royal Exchange, Wreck of the Killarney and Burning of the Arcade in College Green. He died in December 1839, at his home in Manders’ Buildings, Ranelagh, leaving a widow Caroline, and several children, including two sons. The first, William, born in 1808, followed his father as a painter of landscapes. The second son, Rupert, born two years later, exhibited at the RHA in 1829 and had a business in Liffey Street restoring and cleaning paintings. The vendor has brought to our attention that this painting depicts HMS Agamemnon of the Blue, with Horatio Nelson, at Napoli , 1793.; Provenance : ; Purchased from Ashley Court , Tiverton, Devon, where it hung for at least 150 years, and to the present Vendor.

WILLIAM SADLER II (1782 – 1839) View of Westport House, County Mayo, With Croagh Patrick in the distance Oil on canvas, 74cm x 54cm The view of Westport House represents a key depiction within Sadler’s known oeuvre that goes beyond the traditional landscapes of Dublin and its environs. By including the domestic architectural feature within this extensive landscape setting, he combines two distinct traditions of Irish painting in the late 18th and 19th centuries. While these landscapes often had an element of the sublime or romantic, with the artist’s taking considerable license with the compositional arrangement for aesthetic preference, in this instance there is a clear topographical link established. The palladian mansion of Wesport, with it’s purest white stone facade, is set on the egde of Clew bay, with the majestic peak of Croagh Patrick rising in the distance. The original house would have been much smaller, it was built by Colonel John Browne, who was descent of the famous O’Malley clan. The east front of the house as it stands today was built by the Colonel’s grandson John 1st Earl of Altamont under the plans of the famous German architect Richard Cassels. Half a century later, the Earl’s son Peter added the south wing after a design by Thomas Ivory and his son completed the square with the work of James Wyatt. One of the earliest known depictions of the house, is in work dating from 1761 by the artist George Moore which saw it set amongst its newly designated park land. While the house in Sadler’s work is a realtively small feature, by placing it in the centre distance, highlighted by the sun shining down the side of the mountain, it immediately becomes the focal point. The landscape around it is extensive suggesting the considerable wealth and power of its inhabitants, which at this stage would have been the family of the 2nd Marquess of Sligo. WILLIAM SADLER II (1782-1839)Bullock Castle, Dalkey, with Bartra Martello Tower in the distanceOil on panel, 19.5 x 26.5cm (7¾ x 10½'')Known particularly for his competent, atmospheric and topographically interesting views of the countryside around Dublin, Sadler remains an enigma in the history of 19th century Irish art. This is partially because his father, William (fl.1768-1788) and his own son, also William (b.1808) painted somewhat similar scenes in a vaguely similar style and can be confused. William Sadler II, however, stands out as being a better painter than either his father or his son. He is also credited as having taught painting and counted James Arthur O'Connor as one of his pupils. Sadler was greatly influenced by and did many copies of the Old Masters, particularly Dutch painters and this influence is seen in his landscape compositions with small figural groups. He also incorporated their technique of painting bright highlights to accentuate the almost three dimensional effect of his figures.

William Sadler RHA (1782-1839)View of Ross Castle, KillarneyOil on board, 49 x 77cm (19¼ x 30¼”)Ross Castle was built in the late 15th century by local ruling clan the O’Donoghues Mor (Ross), though ownership changed hands during the Second Desmond Rebellion of the 1580s to the MacCarthy Mór. Lord Muskerry (MacCarthy) held the castle against Edmund Ludlow who marched to Ross with 4,000 foot soldiers and 200 horse; however, it was by water that he attacked the stronghold. At the end of the wars, the Brownes were able to show that their heir was too young to have taken part in the rebellion and they retained the lands. By about 1688, they had erected a mansion house near the castle, but their adherence to James II of England caused them to be exiled. The castle became a military barracks, which remained so until early in the 19th century. The Brownes did not return to live at Ross but built Kenmare House near Killarney.

William Sadler II (1782-1839)A View of Dublin from ChapelizodOil on panel 38 x 51cmWilliam Sadler was born about 1782 and practiced in Dublin as a painter, producing mainly views of neighbourhoods of the city and it’s environs. He was known to have produced many copies of the old masters and was fond of painting dramatic scenes, ones of conflagrations being quite numerous. He was a regular contributor to exhibitions in the city between 1809 and 1821. He later exhibited at the newly formed Royal Hibernian Academy. The present work, A View of Dublin from Chapelizod is seen from an elevated position near the Magazine Fort in the Phoenix Park and looks east past the Royal Hospital at Kilmainham and onwards to the city. The sweep of roadway in the foreground is busy with a coach and four, a group of soldiers and other traffic. The topography is quite busy and arguably, licensed, with many Dublin features evident, such as the windmill at St. James’s Gate, various church spires and Gandon’s Four Courts. Sadler almost certainly would have been familiar with similar views by Tudor, Malton and Ashford, the latter’s view (NGI 4138) set a little further back and perhaps a little more panoramic as a result. While Ashford’s painting displays his typical attention to detail, Sadler creates a mood yet still paying homage to Claudean, Neo-classical ideals. Both paintings feature prominently the Sarah Bridge with its elegant arches but Sadler’s view incorporates, in more detail, buildings on the riverside at Islandbridge. The city too is presented as a semi-industrial one with chimney stacks billowing smoke into the hazy blue sky.
