Hailing from a family of artists, Walter Dendy Sadler showed an early talent for painting. In 1870, at just 16 years of age, Sadler enrolled at London's Heatherley School of Fine Art. He studied for two years before moving to Germany to continue sharpening his skills. By 1873, two prominent galleries in England had exhibited artist Sadler's paintings, cementing his reputation as an adept genre painter. 

Paintings and etchings by Walter Dendy Sadler highlight everyday people in comical situations or with exaggerated expressions. With his attention to background details in his paintings, artist Sadler provided keen insight into domestic Victorian settings. His humorous depictions of monks completing their everyday tasks like fishing or cooking also brought renown. Indeed, one such painting was among the first collected by Henry Tate.               "Water For The Dog" Walter Dendy Sadler (1854-1923) Walter Dendy Sadler was born in Dorking, a market town in Surrey in southern England, and brought up in Horsham, West Sussex, England. At age 16 he decided to become a painter and enrolled for two years at Heatherly's School of Art in London, subsequently studying in Germany under Burfield and Wilhelm Simmler. In 1897 Sadler moved to Hemingford Grey, Huntingdonshire, where he died 13 November 1923, aged 69. He exhibited at the Dudley Gallery from 1872 and at the Royal Academy from the following year through to the 1890s. He was a member of the RBA, he also exhibited at the RA (Royal Academy). He painted contemporary people in domestic and daily life pursuits, showing them with comical expressions illustrating their greed, stupidity etc This is a Chromolithograph titled "Water for the Dog" Its in beautiful condition ready to hang. The frame measures 67cm by 56cm high
