MARCO SADELER (1614-1660). ‘February’. Engraving on paper glued to paper. With faults and restorations. Signed in the lower right area. Measurements: 13,5 x 20 cm. The Sadeler family was the largest, and probably the most successful, of the dynasties of Flemish printmakers who dominated Northern European printmaking in the late 16th and 17th centuries, both as artists and publishers. Like other dynasties, such as the Wierix and Van de Passe, the style of the family members is very similar, and their works are often difficult to distinguish, in the absence of a signature or date, or evidence of their location. Many of their best works were high-quality reproductions of prints by contemporary artists such as Bartholomeus Spranger (Aegidius II) or the Venetian Bassano family (Jan I and Raphael I), which were important in spreading the reputation and style of these artists.

SADELER, Justus – SCOLARI, Stefano. Urbs Venetum ut Nulli (Veduta di piazzetta San Marco). Venezia, Sadeler, 1670-80 Incisione su rame. 315x430 mm. Piccoli margini. Stato II/II. In basso al centro stemma dogale con il leone di S. Marco, attorniato da due divinità marine della mitologia classica. Sotto, sulla base del monumento, il titolo: “Urbs Venetum Ut Nulli Cedit … Pozoseratus pinxit et del. 1585”. Sotto, al centro “Steffano Scolari forma in Venetia”; a destra: “Venetiis Justus Sadeler formis”. Ottima conservazione. Rarissima incisione, con un’animata veduta prospettica della Piazzetta verso la Basilica. Stefano Scolari, attivo dal 1652 al 1691 o più tardi, incisore ed editore tenne a Venezia “a San Zulian, all insegna delle tre Virtu'. Spesso si firmava Steffano. Acquistò i rami dello stampatore e incisore Justus Sadeler. Fece testamento nel 1691.
