Passion of Christ: the binding of Christ; Christ lies on the floor in the foreground as three men bind him with ropes and beat him with sticks; beyond, at left, a staircase leading to a terrace where several men have gathered. 1589 Engraving made by Jan Sadeler I after Christoph Schwarz. From a series of nine prints consisting of a title-page and eight scenes of the Passion, engraved by Sadeler after Schwartz in 1589. The eight scenes derive from the Passion altarpiece painted for Duchess Renata of Lorraine, wife of Wilhelm V of Bavaria, in 1589: the panels (of which only the Crucifixion survives) were painted by Schwarz after a design by Friedrich Sustris.
