    This is an 1844 engraving of President George Washington. The print was issued by G. Stuart in Albion, New York and engraved by H. S. Sadd. This print was published after Washington's death, to celebrate his importance as one of the founders of our great nation. His visage is based on the famous "Lansdowne" portrait by Gilbert Stuart, painted in 1796. This standing portrait shows President George Washington in front of neoclassical columns. In his right hand, he holds a dress sword, hinting at his military prowess and his significant role as Commander in Chief. To his left is a table strewn with books, scrolls, and quill and inkpot to signify rule of law.

    Henry S. Sadd (American, 1835-1884). "Lord Viscount Nelson Duke of Bronte, &c .&c..", mezzotint, inscribed lower right "Nelson Bronte", published in New York in 1843. Engraving depicts the Duke standing in an interior wearing formal military uniform of tail coat over white pants and vest, his right jacket sleeve pinned to jacket front where he lost his arm in battle, and his left arm extended toward a tapestry covered table topped with an unrolling map. An upholstered chair rests behind the subject with jacket or cape tossed over its back, and a mantle with clock and books is seen in background. Sheet size approximately 25" x 19".
